I'm just searching for scotch tape on Amazon ready for Christmas. It got me thinking how double sided sticky tape was but a dream back when I was little. Blue Peter used it all the time but it was something I'd never have. The same with play dough. I only ever had plasticine. Scotch tape was fancy too, we only ever had yellow sellotape. Ribera. I'm sure I'll think of others.

Satsumas or nuts at any time other than Christmas.

Fruit scented pens.

Parents who liked each other.

Fluffymule · 02/11/2022 16:59

In the 70’s;

Alpen museli
Ski yoghurts
Home furnishings from Habitat
Fresh coffee made in a percolator
Broadsheet newspapers
People who did yoga
People who regularly went to the theatre, museums, galleries
People who waited until evening to open their Christmas presents

@GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER think you meant to reply to @jennakong 🤣🤣🤣

I wondered what pink toilet rolls had to do with my Wimpy longings 🤣

But I do remember coloured toilet paper

I remember watching tomorrow’s world and they had a fax machine that was linked to a man in Australia and he sent a photo of his face live on air.

People wrote in thinking it was a prank!

I was amazed!

I thought fax machines were amazing too! Still have noidea how they work! Smile

TheMarzipanDildo · 02/11/2022 17:02

Hallways. Porches. Utility rooms (although I still think they’re posh).

TheMarzipanDildo · 02/11/2022 17:07

Avocados. Tofu.

These are still uppity foods imo but I eat them all the time now!

Dartmoorcheffy · 02/11/2022 17:10

A telephone

Eating out

Holidays abroad, in fact any holiday apart from a few days visit to a relative

New furniture

Newish family car

Getting a taxi

Central heating

Shower (we had a rubber hose that went on the bath taps)

Grew up in the 70s and whilst we weren't poor, we didn't have any luxuries or spare money.

mathanxiety · 02/11/2022 17:12

Clothes that weren't hand made.
Vegetables and herbs that weren't grown in the garden, like peppers, chilis, oregano.

I dreamed as a child of some way to turn off my bedroom light that didn't involve getting out from under the covers when I was finished reading and ready to go to sleep.

Also - related to that - warm feet.

mathanxiety · 02/11/2022 17:12

And I coveted office tools like staplers, tape dispensers, staple picker outers...

PlainJaneSuperBrain99 · 02/11/2022 17:14

Sky/cable TV.

A shell suit (eventually got bought one 2 years after everyone else stopped wearing them)

A soda stream.

Cabbage patch doll/any "it" toy.

Personal cd player.

Dublin, 2016.
It was a very old fashioned menu...

Jersey 2021. 😂

sueelleker · 02/11/2022 17:26

Gwenhwyfar · 02/11/2022 10:45

It was served as a starter at formal meals.

And it was usually luke-warm!

Benjispruce4 · 02/11/2022 17:26

Yes to eating out. I don’t think we ever did this as a family in the 70s. I think we started to in the 80s but it would’ve been a big family occasion or special birthday. Same for takeaway.Maybe once or twice a year.I’m 51.

Flimmy · 02/11/2022 17:27

Lucozade when I was ill was very special and very restorative.

Hotdogs with all the toppings when on holiday at Butlins.

I didn't know anyone who lived in a detached house and didn't go in one until in my 20s. All my family and friends lived in council flats or council houses.

HotWashCycle · 02/11/2022 17:29

Marks & Spencer. Anything from there - clothes, food, especially clothes. Completely out of my orbit and very middle class, affluent it all seemed to me.

FictionalCharacter · 02/11/2022 10:51

And the grapefruit segments were neatly cut with a grapefruit knife! I don’t know whether grapefruit knives are still a thing.

I have not one, but two grapefruit knives (thanks mum) and a set of grapefruit spoons with a pointy end and serrated edge. I still use them.
Going out and having a cup of tea. You can wait till you get home!
Imperial leather soap. Mum dabbing a tiny bit of Tweed behind her ears when she and dad very rarely went out.

Chickenvoicesinmyhead · 02/11/2022 17:33

Going to a restaurant for prawn cocktail and steak. Actually just going to a restaurant regardless

Having a curry

Being treated to a bitter lemon drink

Holidays abroad

Soda Stream

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 02/11/2022 17:37

I’ve been Googling grapefruit knives and now I want one, love old fashioned kitchenalia

ItHasTheJuice · 02/11/2022 17:37

Going in attractions. We'd go on holiday and simply drive past attractions and never actually pay to go in. We went all the way to Lands End just to stay in the car, same thing at countless old castles, stately homes, theme parks, foresty places like Clumber Park etc. I've been to loads of places in the UK as a child, but never left the car.

What?? Why? That seems so mean, driving you to a theme park but staying in the car :(

ChillysWaterBottle · 02/11/2022 11:13

When I was a kid I saw an ad on the telly once for a stennah stairlift and thought it was the height of luxury. I assumed all celebrities must have one in their homes.

I love this!

Usual stuff for me - Ribena, neapolitan. I remember when Dad brought home a tub of Toffee Fudge Gino Ginelli... I thought we must be moving up in the world!

Then came the late 90s when my mum started working again and we had all the trashy freezer food you can think of... baked bean pizza, instant whip...

FeralWitch · 02/11/2022 17:41

Aapri Apricot Facial Scrub.

fizzyfood · 02/11/2022 17:41

Owning a dishwasher was for posh people, eating at the table instead of on your lap, holidaying abroad, having an electric tin opener, all these were considered posh. Having a drive/ garage and a hallway was also for rich people.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 02/11/2022 17:49

@Benjispruce4 , AFAIK salmon was a luxury, before the advent of fish farms.
