Does anyone have a plant hanging from your ceiling? How? What hook?

Morning all, I have a lovely plant in a pot with the hanging string above it which would be perfect for a corner, but all the searching on google and Amazon isn't showing me a hook I should use.

Do you have one hanging? How have you hung it?

I’ve been wondering this too!

A quick google search for ceiling hooks for plants has bought up plenty of options, some of which are on Amazon. If I knew how to post links on here I would!!

So my DH is convinced that a plasterboard ceiling won't support the hook and heavy plant and it needs to go into a joist.

I'm thinking one of those wing type hooks would work. Cautious I might rip a hole in the ceiling and smash the plant.

I had a hanging plant for some years. The hook was screwed into the joist above and the hole through the plaster hidden by a small metal disc above the hook, painted each time the ceiling was painted.
To attach to plasterboard, you need a hook with a flange, that opens up behind the plasterboard.

UltimateIrritant · 02/11/2022 09:53

I have ours on an ordinary large cup hook - nothing special - however it is screwed into a joist.
A plant would easily rip plaster board out, especially when just watered and heavy - in my opinion.

Pootles34 · 02/11/2022 09:55

Yes ours is screwed into a joist. Make sure it's somewhere you can easily water it! It's a bit of a fandango to be honest, I think it's easier to have them dangling down a bookcase or from a shelf.

Hang it from a bracket attached to the wall instead.

He's correct, it needs to go right through to a joist.

I just put in a screw in hook. It’s been up for a year now 🤷🏻‍♀️

The6thQueen · 02/11/2022 12:13

These (with plasterboard screws), should work without needing to find the joist. Just make sure you take it out to water if it’s big, the water weight might be too much

So one of those screws and a normal hook? Or a hook that spreads out? You can't buy them individually either by the look of it and I only need one.

It is quite a heavy plant pot and you lot are right when watered it will be even heavier.

I am trying to avoid the bracket on the wall as it won't look as good as from the ceiling but a damaged ceiling will look worse.

I have been wondering this too, then wondering how you get an indoor hanging thing. I can only think of macrame, which seems very 70's.

VenusClapTrap · 02/11/2022 22:51

Mine are all attached to the beams.

Mrstumbletap · 23/11/2022 09:18

So bought one of those expanding hook things and it didn't work at all.

I had to buy in a pack of 8 off Amazon and the joist behind the plasterboard meant the hook spring wouldn't open.

Arghhh so now how do I go through the plasterboard and the joist? with what type of hook?

We bought a single screw in hook from the "tool pick n mix" section in Wilko. It is in a joist and holds it fine.

We do a very light misty water weekly, then bring it down once a month and sit it in the kitchen for a proper drink.

Well, to be fair, no one recommended one of those types of hooks Grin

Everyone said screw in one.
