Need a handhold- DH gone to A&E

DH(43) had excruciating stomach pain overnight that wasn’t relieved by painkillers. Bit of soft stools and vomiting couple of times but not proper diarrhoea. We called 111 who advised going to A&E. As we have young DC asleep he went by taxi. He has texted that he’s been put on a drip with painkillers, having blood and urine samples taken. Apparently there was blood in the urine sample. I’m absolutely terrified, anyone have experience of this?

It could be a UTI. Hopefully it is nothing sinister and he is home soon 🤞🏻

meateatingveggie · 02/11/2022 06:10

Or kidney stones.

NiceTwin · 02/11/2022 06:11

Could be a kidney stone on the move, that can be excruciating.
I know easy said but try not to worry, he has been seen and treated, which is a positive!

sounds like a kidney stone. Don’t worry they usually pass but need pain relief as they do so.

Soulcurry · 02/11/2022 06:34

Thank you, I hope it’s nothing too serious. I will update as soon as I know more.

i agree it sounds like kidney stones they are unbelievably painful! or possibly appendicitis my husband had very similar symptoms when he had it. He's in the best place now hopefully he will be on the mend v soon

GrapefruitGin · 02/11/2022 06:36

My OH suffers with kidney stones every 5ish years… they are excruciating. Sounds similar OP. He’s in the best place so try to breathe and relax, he will be feeling much better now he’s been given some pain relief.

Soulcurry · 02/11/2022 06:43

@mickandrorty he had his appendix removed when he was a teenager so kidney stones seems the more likely diagnosis I hope.

I thought kidney stones reading your post. I had them last year. Unbelievably painful - I thought I was dying. But once it passed, after a few days of feeling a bit tender, was completely back to normal as if it had never happened.

Where was his pain?

Soulcurry · 02/11/2022 06:58

@RebeccaCloud9 he described it as s general pain around not localised to any side

Don’t panic, there are SO many easily treatable things this could be. Hopefully you’ll get some news soon.

Soulcurry · 02/11/2022 08:53

He’s back home now, as all his tests were clear he has been discharged. They said it’s likely a viral infection. I know there’s a viral bug going around but haven’t heard of such intense pain with it. He has been given a stronger painkiller but is still in pain.

To add, he has been asked to contact our GP again for scans to rule out kidney stones. I don’t know why a scan wasn’t offered there?

Because A and E are there to sort out accidents and emergencies and will pass ongoing care back to primary care.

SkylightSkylight · 02/11/2022 09:27

I'm pleased to hear he's home!

it's a shame they couldn't do the scan while he was there.

my Ex had that once, the pain was extreme, it turned out to be gall stones. they broke them up & other than hearing them hit the porcelain he didn't have any more problems with them.

Soulcurry · 02/11/2022 09:53

He’s still in a lot of pain as codeine is barely touching it. GP are reluctant to prescribe anything stronger without seeing the discharge report from A&E which hasn’t come through yet. They advised us to go back to A&E if the pain doesn’t subside, poor DH is still in agony.

Any better, Soulcurry?

acute severe pain is an emergency. I am surprised that ED have not sorted out a scan to exclude kidney stones. They normally would….

olympicsrock · 02/11/2022 20:16

If he still has severe pain go back to ED….

Soulcurry · 02/11/2022 20:20

He had to go back as cocodamol wasn’t touching the pain. Still no scan as they’re sure it’s a viral infection. A urine sample was taken in the 2nd trip which didn’t pick up anything. He has been prescribed Buscopan now which has eased it slightly.
