Going through tough times - can anyone help recommend a podcast

I won’t go into detail here but I’m having a really tough time (to put it lightly) at the moment with relationships, self esteem and work.

i don’t have the money for therapy but I feel calmed by podcasts (and they’re the only thing that helps me sleep) I’m overwhelmed by the choice though.

Can anyone recommend something that’s going to heal my heart and help build my self confidence again?

Not sure if this would have been better in relationships or mental health but….anyone?

Esther Perel's relationship podcast might help with thinking through issues if there are parallels to your relationship. Feel better live more and 10 per cent happier are nice in the wellbeing space. Nothing much happens and Michael Mosley's Sleep Well are nice for dropping off to sleep.

I love 'you're wrong about' and 'maintenance phase'

Thank you SO MUCH ladies, I appreciate your recs so much! Made a note of them all and will choose a couple to start listening to today.

My brain doesn’t currently have the capacity or attention span for tv or reading but podcasts just seem to sink in nicely and quieten my racing brain.

if I can get some relationship advice and perspective while I’m at it - even better

Glennon Doyle’s ‘We Can Do Hard Things’ is a balm

CosmopolitanPlease · 02/11/2022 11:06

I like Feel Better Live More for health, lifestyle and mental attitude.

I don't like many American podcasts but Stuff You Should Know is informative, funny and warm and Josh & Chuck are such loveable, decent guys that it gives you faith in men when you might have lost it!

No Such Thing As A Fish is similar to above, I listen to it to fall asleep as it rarely mentions anything triggering or scary. British, funny and educational.

Adam Buxton's podcast is like a lovely warm hug. And he literally gives you a hug and tells you he loves you if you listen to it til the end. Again, a really sweet decent man.

This Jungian Life is the best podcast on the planet, bar none Wink

Mayim Bialik has a podcast called Breakdown which I find very good.

If I'm having a hard time, I tend to want distraction rather than 'these are your issues, let's deal with them now' (although I do like Mel Robbins and her 'take no shit' approach).

I like Adam Buxton - lots of interesting guests and his style is so warm and open, Jaye Rayner's 'Out to Lunch' and Grace Dent's 'Comfort Eating' (yes, I like podcasts about food!).

'You're Dead to Me' (history / comedy) on BBC Sounds is brilliant and I've also started listening to a terrific show called 'American History Tellers', which relates episodes from American history in the first person, on the basis of a recommendation from a colleague.

Brene Brown is good to listen to.

TheSausageKingofChicago · 02/11/2022 13:33

Loads of good ‘therapy’ type suggestions here.

If you just want something nice and gentle to listen to, light entertainment, Emily Dean’s Walking the Dog is lovely

Mumteedum · 02/11/2022 13:36

Brenne Brown is wonderful.

I also love How to Own the Room by Viv Groskop. Although it's about public speaking, it's about much more. It's supportive, woman focused and so positive.

Annalisa Barbieri is also lovely. Check out Dealing with your inner critic with psychotherapist Julia Bueno from Conversations with Annalisa Barbieri on Amazon Music.

Fortunately with Jane Garvey and Fi Glover - just two women, sometimes plus a guest, wittering about all kinds of things, some serious, some light hearted. Also live, but they are moving from the BBC to Times radio - I think the podcast will continue.

The 'You're wrong about' pods are good, but the episodes about OJ Simpson and Nicole Smith were a bit harrowing.

The Kermode and Mayo film show podcast is also another good one if you like listening to people wittering away in a good natured way. (Tinkety tonk and hello to Jason Isaacs)

paulmccartneysbagel · 02/11/2022 13:53

BlindBoy does some excellent mental health podcasts, as well as hot takes and Irish mythology.

YewEweYou · 02/11/2022 14:24

Another vote for Adam Buxton! Also I find Older and Wider with Jenny Eclair and Judith Holder and Crushed by Margaret Cabourn-Smith quite comforting and gentle, both are just two (usually) women chatting about nothing/everything.

Zarzuela · 02/11/2022 21:03

Agree with PP about This Jungian Life - which I first heard about on here.

I have got a lot out of the Evoke therapy podcasts, useful for everyone not only their target audience.

For nice non therapy, Comfort Blanket, where they discuss a film/book etc someone rewatches as their feel-better thing.
