Are there any lovely Dutch Mumsnetters? Living in the UK?

My mum spent lots of her childhood in Holland, and I want to make her a basket of Dutch treats for Christmas, I have been looking at applestroop and haagel from Amazon but they are £££ for bread toppings. (Thanks Brexit) is there somewhere in the UK to get them cheaper? And what else should I put in?

I am Dutch, but not in the UK. Happy to help though!

Hi, I'm coming over from NL at the end of November...I think it's allowed on the plane as it's not liquid as such.
Send me a message, where are you based in UK.. perhaps I can help 😁

Over the years, I’ve found quite a lot of Dutch stuff in UK shops - made in the Netherlands, but labelled up for the UK market. Not sure if that is of interest to you, but I thought I’d share in case it’s useful:

M&S sell Dutch chocolate dipped shortcake. Those are delicious!

Daelmans stroopwafels are available in larger supermarkets. I’ve seen those in Tesco, Sainsbury’s and possibly the Co-op

Droste chocolate is Dutch - you can get that on Amazon.

Not sure if you’re interested in more savoury options, but I think you can’t go wrong with some Old Amsterdam (available from most supermarkets). M&S wheaten crackers are made in the Netherlands and are exactly like the crackers we get there.
Roka cheese crispies (available from some supermarkets) are another Dutch classic. M&S cheddar cheese crispies are also made in the Netherlands, but possibly a tiny bit less authentic as cheddar is used for those. Having said that, they taste pretty authentic to me!

M&S gets quite a lot of their crackers and biscuits from the Netherlands, so worth having a look at the country of origin on the packaging if you’re stuck on what else to include at a reasonable price!

I'm happy to bring over some appelstroop etc, but will need to arrange postage, as I'm flying into London, if that helps

I have seen Chocomel in supermarket too. I would love to get some Van gilse Pancake syrup but not sure where from. Does she like liquorice (drop)? Hollander hopjes good too but don't think you can get them here. King peppermints are another thing we used to bring back regularly. Sorry that it reads more like a wish list than helpful advice on where to buy.

I haven’t seen much from NL in UK except speculoos stroopwaffles in TKmax.

My in-laws used to send a massive box of treats at this time of year in time for Sinterklaas. Now I stock up when we’re in NL because of shipping costs.

Are you a baker? I make my own pepernoten and speculaas cookies.

Dutch Expat Shop have some Sinterklaas treats, but I’ve never used them.

Forgot that one of the chocolate shops in Norwich sold chocolate letters last year. DSis bought them for DC.

TKMaxx is worth a look for random food from different countries. In ours it's in two different places in the store (checkouts and upstairs) so easy to miss one.

Do you have HEMA in the UK?
They always have plenty of interesting food options - especially at Christmas.

TreesAtSea · 02/11/2022 12:05

Poundland often has Klene soft liquorice and sometimes also speculoos biscuits - not their own brand, ones from NL. I've also seen them in Bargain Buys, previously Poundstretcher.
Shame HEMA closed their UK branches a while back.

Droste chocolate pastilles are sometimes stocked in independent confectioners.

Also Op I’ve just ordered my kids initials in chocolate letters (for sinterklaas) from Etsy. Price was okay and at least it’s not Amazon!
