Diptyque but via Ebay - is it a stupid idea...?

A friend has had some awful news (her mother has terminal cancer) and I wanted to buy her a little something, and Diptyque is something I know she has lusted after but couldn't justify as she has three kids and has always put money aside 'just in case.'

So, I was wondering about getting her one and have seen they are sometimes a bit less via Ebay... While it's tempting to save a tenner or so, it's a bad idea isn't it...? Or is it? Even if it's wrapped (which it would be, I can't give her something that looks like I decided I didn't want it myself first!

Thanks for any pointers! x

If you buy from diptique it all comes beautifully boxed/packaged.

I wouldn't buy from ebay. They will be fake.

JemimaPyjamas · 01/11/2022 19:07

That was I suspected tbh, that they'd be fake. Or at least very likely to be, although many didn't seem quite cheap enough to definitely be, hence my asking!

I didn't think about Diptyque directly as I usually go via Space NK, but beautifully packaged etc would be an extra bonus.

That's how they get you on eBay, the fakes are reassuringly expensive so you think that they must be genuine. I'd never buy anything expensive from eBay.

I agree it will probably be fake.. diptyque service and wrapping is second to none. Imo it’s worth it!! I would be very wary of buying anything possibly fake as it might be toxic. I’ve seen ‘Diptyque’ on Aliexpress 😳 The candles last quite a while and are lovely. I can smell them around our house even when they’re not lit! The other product I think actually is good value as in lasts absolutely ages is their solid soap bars, makes the bathroom smell lovely! X

Maybe via Vinted where you have to tick a box to say everything is OK before the money is released to the seller?

I have an eBay shop where I sometimes sell a few bits of diptyque. In my case, it’s bits from my personal stash that I clear out once it’s clear
they won’t be used. I don’t burn candles nearly as much as I used to. I think like anything, if it looks too good to be true it probably is, but I wouldn’t automatically think fake. You can tell from someone’s feedback if they’re dodgy. It’s a lovely idea for a gift, though I agree that if you buy direct it’ll come beautifully packaged and usually with a few free samples too.

You could get lucky and it’s someone reselling TKMaxx finds, or gifts or advent calendar unwanted but hooky seems more likely

I buy direct

Something so lovely getting a package from Paris 🙂💙

Thank you everyone. I might have to forfeit my Space Nk points and go for the Diptyque direct option.

I sell this brand on eBay from time to time as I pick it up in sales or at TK Maxx (and then realise I have way too many candles). I wouldn’t be sure how to spot a fake though. If you order direct it all comes beautifully wrapped so perhaps worth the extra £10.

mobear · 01/11/2022 20:02

Also you get nice samples if you buy direct ☺️
