Help!! Rats in the walls

Will they get into the house? I’m alone for the evening and can hear scurrying and scratching sounds coming from the wall of my bedroom. It’s the wall that connects our house to next door (semi detached). Will they definitely be in the house as well?

Other than setting the whole house on fire and burning it all to the ground what can I do tonight?

I hate them so much. Shudders

I had rats a couple of years ago in the walls. Could hear them running around at night and sometimes fighting/squealing. The first clue (before we heard them) was seeing the nibble marks out of my housemates butter on the kitchen side.... the second clue was seeing one jump from behind the boiler down behind a cupboard. So in theory yes they can. Doesn't mean they will!

We had them. Like a pp said - one of the drains had a hole which they climbed out of, then dug under soil to get to the cavity wall. At first they stayed in the wall, but then they explored and went to ceiling and made their way to kitchen. In the kitchen there were gaps between the floorboards and wall under the kitchen units. We had to get pest control to cover all gaps with wire mesh so they couldn’t come into living area. Then they had to do investigations to find out where they were coming from (cameras in drains). They eventually found the point and blocked it off - which was good (we used pestology who have experience with drains as well as pest control.). I would advise you to keep all food in plastic boxes and in cupboard and keep an eye out for rat/mouse droppings - even though they might not have come to the kitchen yet, a curious one might be able to find it’s way there after exploring. Best of luck with getting it sorted - do talk to neighbour’s relatives as they might be at risk if they are a vulnerable adult.

Don't want to derail this post in any way but we have the same problem of a rat or mouse in the cavity wall in our kitchen (it's the remainder of the wall left when the kitchen/ dining room we're knocked through. It only ever seems to get so far in so I don't think it has access to the rest of the house. Dh filled up all the entry points he could find outside but we've just realised we've blocked it in rather than blocked it out. Is it going to be able to eat into the house now or will it just die in the wall? We're due a new baby in 3 weeks time and now I'm panicking 🙈
