Zoom question - live captions/subtitles

I need to plan a meeting where a speaker will be addressing people in a room as well as joiners on Zoom.

Is there any easy tool where it is possible to create subtitles that show on screen that follow the speaker talking?

Yes. You will however have to set the meeting up with “enhanced” encryption not “end to end” for the feature to work. When the meeting starts, you can click a button at the bottom which will do live transcription automatically by computer.

Go to settings and make sure the live captions feature is turned on. Then when the meeting starts, you will have to turn the captions on - at bottom of screen, might say CC or auto/live captions. Everyone attending will then see the captions and can turn them off in their menu if they don't want to have captions.

Remember they are not perfect so the speaker does need to check that any unusual words are translated correctly.

That looks like a good tutorial. Thanks.

This is crucial to remember. If the speaker mumbles anything, says anything fast, uses jargon or their audio cuts because of streaming speed it will affect the subtitles substantially. Sometimes with amusing effect but if your call is anything to do with mandatory and legislative content it may be worth having a screen that confirms verbatim what needs to be known e.g. specific legal acts or jargon terms.

Yes, that is slightly my worry. Is it more miss than hit?

MS teams has a live captioning function which works well

Tbh, it depends on the speaker and whether you will have a lot of jargon.

With regards to the speaker, they need to speak at a steady rate so not too fast and don't mumble.

The live caption facility is pretty good at adjusting to the speaker but strong accents are a problem.

1001Daffodils suggestion of a jargon list is a good idea - you can send it out via the chat function and viewers can have it on their screen at the same time if needed.

The other option - but more work - is to have a ppt presentation with all the relevant information. Just remember if you have any deaf people watching, they will want to see the speakers face so make sure everyone knows how to adjust the screen so they can see the speaker and the ppt clearly.

I am deaf so very used to using zoom and trying to find the best solution!

Definitely depends on the speaker.

Accents are fine, the tricky bits are the things I mentioned. If you have a clear and well paced speaker it can pick up pretty accurately apart from acronyms/industry specific jargon etc.

It's a great tool used properly.
