Issues with the feel of clothes

I was explaining to someone the other day how clothes can make me feel really angry at times. Not an emotional angry response but a physical response inside i.e. I won't have an angry outburst but I will feel internally cross until I sort the issue out. The biggest cause of this is socks. Unless my feet are freezing I prefer naked feet. I hate having trapped feet and flip flops would be my preferred choice of footwear. Skinny jeans are another issue. I don't like feeling of compression on my legs. I tend to go for boyfriend cut everything to avoid this but I wondered how common this type of reaction to clothing is?

It sounds like a sensory issue. Are you neurodivergent?

AngryFeetSox · 01/11/2022 17:10

No I really don't think I am. I have done an online test (how accurate they are I don't know) but I came back very low. I only did it as my son has ASC.

psychology-tools.com/test/autism-spectrum-quotient this one is often used as part of the diagnosis process. My son is autistic too (and according to the aq test I am very likely autistic too). I have issues with certain clothing, similar to what you experience.

I have the same, sometimes put 3 or 4 things on that don’t feel right ( but they did last week or last month!) before I find something that’s ok. I have fibromyalgia and CFS so put it down to that.

I've had this issue all my life. I was regularly late for school as my clothes weren't comfortable and would upset me. The same has happened in jobs, late many times and end up all worked up/ mini tantrum. Thankfully I now work from home so can wear whatever I want.

BuryingAcorns · 01/11/2022 17:23

I sympathise. I once got a member of my team to cut a label out of the back of a shirt I was wearing as I couldn;t concentrate on work because it was touching my neck.

I scored very low on ASC test but have ADHD.

Yes I hate socks and shoes. Flip flops and Toms are about as much as I can stand. I find it upsetting wearing socks and shoes.

Weepingwillows12 · 01/11/2022 17:34

My son gets really upset wearing wool on bare skin and hates buttons. He will wear them now but takes them off as soon as he can.

Onthebrink87 · 01/11/2022 17:40

Yes! I found myself in a rut of stretchy cotton leggings and cotton tahirfs ghat are 3x too big! I also regularly get out of bed to pull my bottom sheet tight as I get an embarrassing amount of rage from loose sheets - I feel like I'm being smothered! I have ADHD though!

AngryFeetSox · 01/11/2022 17:41

Oh labels are the worst too. I absolutely can't concentrate either with a label jabbing me. I will do the posted test to see how I score again. I also cannot stand wool touching me. I don't understand cashmere and suede makes me feel sick. I also hate touching anything chalky or rusty.

DD (11) is very similar. Hates anything too close on her legs (so no leggings, skinny jeans etc) and will only wear preworn clothes because they are soft.

Babdoc · 01/11/2022 17:48

Yes. DD and I are autistic, and neither of us can stand the feel of tights, or polyester clothing. As a child she also hated the feel of suede.

AriettyHomily · 01/11/2022 18:12

My daughter and I are ASD and VERY particular. She has to wear socks with everything, I can't tolerate socks at all. Labels are a PITA as even when you cut them out there are jaggy bits.

timetogetlost · 01/11/2022 18:53

Yes I the same and struggle to wear hats, scarves, gloves, watches, jewellery, glasses etc

Ameadowwalk · 01/11/2022 18:58

My son has sensory processing issues and clothes are a big trigger. I just buy the same 100% organic cotton things he will wear, but even then seams are a problem. Nothing tight, starchy (I once bought a onesie from the shop floor exactly the same as one I had bought online and he refused to wear it as it was more starchy than the online one 🤷🏻‍♀️), shiny, woolly, etc etc etc.

on the other hand, I hate loose or baggy clothes flapping about me. I need to wear tight vests under loose blouses or t-shirts.
