Would you leave the UK now if you could?

I've been thinking this...with how things are going in the UK, would you leave if you could, or encourage your kids to?

I know nowhere is perfect but just curious of peoples thoughts.

That’s odd. I have about a dozen former colleagues and friends who have moved from the UK to various European countries in the past including Germany, France, Sweden and Poland for a range of skilled or professional jobs and none have needed to buy £500k houses to do so.

That is advice from Spanish - based immigration advisors.

I have also been given the same advice but am now retired.

We moved to France and wouldn’t consider going back. Our dc got a great education, health care is amazing , we have the house of our dreams and we can ski and be on the beach in the same day should we want to.
Best decision we ever made.

Crunched · 01/11/2022 18:09

My niece has just (began 1st October) got a great job in Amsterdam in publishing. It is a permanent role, she cannot speak Dutch and is renting an apartment.

"Sounds exhausting" to quote Basil Fawlty.

Wibbly1008 · 01/11/2022 18:13

I would leave tomorrow…so long as my parents didn’t follow me!

notimagain · 01/11/2022 18:15

If your DC are qualified and skilled and speak second languages then they can still apply to relevant workplaces to use those skills and qualifications in relevant jobs, in both the EU and elsewhere. Little has really changed.

Not quite..EU based companies are not going to jump through the extra hoops required to employ a non EU national when they can get employees from within the community...There are also other problems with companies that have bases/offices in several EU countries and perhaps may require individuals to occasionally change base/office of work...

I'm sure that won't be a barrier to those with some very niche skills and qualifications but it can be a significant extra hurdle for employment within the EU for some Brits with even quite high level technical qualifications....Given the choice the employer will recruit the EU national.

It seems that many people are quite keen to become migrants in another country 😐

What's wrong with that?

They cannot gain a visa unless they can purchase a property worth over 500K, which they can't. Both are educated to degree level and have tried to gain residence based on their professions (NHS and oilfield planning,) but have been advised that they will be unsuccessful.
Less than 10% of third country applications are being accepted.

Have they looked into Aus? Oilfield and healthcare could be good for points system

theDudesmummy · 01/11/2022 18:27

We moved to Ireland in 2020. Decision made the day after the 2019 election.

Shitfather · 01/11/2022 18:28

If it wasn’t for DS, I’d have left this country. I’m genuinely worried for the future of it. The climate before lockdown was a dream. We wine have good times again for a very very long time. Everything feels so broken and the government so corrupt and self-serving.

Yes, we have but really want to stay in Europe.
Thanks for responding.

QueueEtwo · 01/11/2022 18:28

I would love to leave! I hate the fact we have become such a small mean Country!

theDudesmummy · 01/11/2022 18:34

I don't understand the people talking about having to look into Irish ancestry. You don't need anything to move to Ireland if you have a Britsh (or obviously an EU) passport. I had never been to Ireland before and have no connection with Ireland whatsoever. We just moved here.

wesayno · 01/11/2022 18:38

vinetbrie · 01/11/2022 17:21

We would have moved abroad but actually believed that UK would negotiate free movement and rights of residence post- Brexit. Instead, we still have Imperial delusions of grandeur.
Hate what UK has become.
On holiday in Spain earlier this year, I walked past a French couple who exclaimed when they saw me (just arrived so milk bottle blue/white)
"Il est Anglais!"
I turned to them and said,
"Non, Ecosse."
Their attitude changed immediately and we had a long exchange about how our country has gone into decline and how Europeans are amazed at how we've developed and the lies the government sold us.

This has always been the case lol, have you never heard of the Auld Alliance? Compare that to historic French-English relations.

Always good to be Scottish abroad. Everyone loves us Grin But imagine taking that conversation as basis for the UK declining lol

micedontpaint · 01/11/2022 18:42

I can't think of anywhere better for us. I like having freedom, to make medical choices, education choices, cost of living where I am is absolutely fine. I find other countries all a bit more controlling over the things I make my own choices over. I home educated for two years. I get left alone. I don't have very high expectations though. I do like my country and like being here.

I (...) want to cry at the shitty place my country has become

Aw, don't cry. I live in the UK and it's not shitty where I live. It's lovely and friendly. Safe. Lots of places to walk the dog. Good transport network. Can go on lovely days out by car or by coach. Loads of eateries, lots of markets, food festivals, flower shows etc. Lots of cheap UK breaks available.
But....unfortunately, I can't do anything about the weather. Although this has been a very warm October so that's something. 🙂

Dying to know where you live!

BillyAndTheSillies · 01/11/2022 18:43

We've toyed with moving to Cyprus, DH has an Irish passport through MIL so he's sorted but it would take me and the DC years to sort out visas. FIL has a Cypriot passport and there are ways we could do it but the red tape is a lot. We can run our business remotely - if I don't have EU passport we need to be able to prove we have income from the UK to stay for more than three months at a time.

I'd miss London too much, and my parents. So we will just ride this out.

When we tot up the costs of education, visas, buying a place or renting a place on balance it's no cheaper than living where we do currently just with better weather. I imagine the quality of childhood my DC would have would be better out there and they can have an education in line with the British curriculum.

My brother moved to Australia in June and I can't help but feel a little jealous that he just uprooted himself and left. But equally, I'm now the only child here for my parents if they needed help as they get older.

I'd say the same about where I am in Liverpool. It's green, there's things to do. Parks. Cheap. Nice people. No complaints here. I think your surroundings are what you make them. There's ample things to do and days out all the time if I wish to go to them.

ScarlettnotOHara · 01/11/2022 18:49

Absolutely, the damp, grey weather gets me right down . Our city is boarded up and dirty and we are working hard for very little life pleasures . We visited Seville and were blown away with the scenery and culture. We went out to a local bar where people in their 50s were dancing and having a great time ! We just sit in every night watching tv 😞
