Is this copying their name?

My best friends got a little boy called Theodore, they call him theo for short.
I'm expecting a little boy and have always like the name teddy.
I know teddy is a known nickname for Theodore, but they've never called him that. Would I be out of line or seen as 'copying' their boys name by calling mine teddy?

I wouldn’t think so but some people can be precious.

I don’t think so. You could always name yours Edward with nn teddy if you wanted to make it more different.

I think it’s fine, especially as they don’t use the diminutive Teddy. However from personal experience of working with boys and young men who hate their cutesy names (Tommy, Davey, Johnny etc) I would strongly recommend using Edward or Ted as the legal name, to be known as Teddy.

Edward is a good strong name, can be shortened to Teddy, then Ted or Ed when he's older

Theres two Teddys on my street and I feel for both of them. Might be nice in nursery but call him Edward (although thats been super common since Ed Sheeran) and he can choose to be called Teddy.

My Mrs wretches when old school pals call me Eddie for some reason let alone Teddy. Might as well call him Sue and be done with it Its hard for young men nowadays and you won’t be helping him.
