Hi considering a very low key wedding with possibly just parents and our two very young children in a posh hotel. We all have a meal then we stay. I am 37. What do you think of this dress? Too much? It's aboit 1200 second hand. Woukd never have planned to spend this much when hardly anyone seeing it but I keep going back to it. I'm also not sure it'll fit as I'm a size 8/10.

Also any advice appreciated for small wedding.

I think you could get something in a similar style for far less from some of the high street wedding collections - Coast, Whistles and Little Mistress are good. £1,200 is a lot to spend for second hand unless there’s an option to try it on and return it if it doesn’t fit?

The model is also very slim and willowy. Are you a true 8-10 or, being honest with yourself, on the larger side of the 10? I’m not sure the dress will hang quite the same if so.

It's a pretty dress - tasteful and understated in a good way IMO. Ultimately you can wear what you want for your wedding or any other occasion. In my mind what one wears on their wedding day is an expression of how they want to look, what they imagined and what they feel their best in and not something for other people to see.

I've no plans to marry but I think if I changed my mind and ever did I'd also want the smallest possible affair and would just wear a dress I loved (regardless of colour or length etc) the type of thing I'd have no excuse to wear otherwise.

All I would say is that if it isn't the right size and you aren't sure it can easily be let out if you need it bigger, that is a lot of money to potentially waste. Perhaps find somewhere you can try one on?

It's a beautiful dress and when else apart from your wedding day can you justify spending that kind of money on a dress. You could always sell it afterwards

@AcrobaticActuary Yes a true 8 /10. I'm 8st 9 and 5'8". I was thinking the girl (not the model) was bigger than me. I can go and try it on at least. But you're right it's quite expensive.
@dontgobaconmyheart Yes I've been engaged 5 years and just sort of toying with the idea. Suppose I could always sell it after. I'm trying trying to think of logistics, childcare etc. Hence the parents being involved.

Sizing is less of an issue if you think you’re smaller than the model: it’s far easier to get something taken in where you need it than let out. And if you can actually go and try it on first then even less of a problem. £1,200 is a lot but if you can afford it then this is the one occasion to splash out.

Your wedding plans are idyllic and your choice of dress is wonderful, it's really special. Have a wonderful day!

Unbridezilla · 01/11/2022 12:49

In insolation, 1100 is obviously a lot of money, but if you like the beaded style, then they are costly due to the higher labour costs.

If you can try it on and still love it, why not? It's (hopefully) the only one you'll ever wear! And why should a small wedding mean you can't feel as a amazing in a dress than someone with more guests?!

SporkAndMonday · 01/11/2022 12:50

I too think you could get similar for cheaper and I hate the massive fan thing

AriettyHomily · 01/11/2022 12:55

Your wedding sounds wonderful and I like the dress but it's maybe a bit much for a low key wedding? Where will have the meal, in the hotel restaurant or a private room? I think I would feel rather out of place in the restaurant!

I also think 1200 is a lot for a second hand dress, what was the value new?

CoffeeBeansGalore · 01/11/2022 13:04

Hi @Sandals12
I googled 1920s style wedding dresses & this popped up. Under £500.

Absolutely stunning dress, and with your height and figure I'd say it'll be beautiful on you - you need to be tall to pull it off.

How does it work in the hotel out of interest? - are you in a private room?

HamHand · 01/11/2022 13:11

I LOVE both options OP. I’ve had friends marry in dresses from Monsoon and Phase Eight which were both similar looking, so might be worth it. But it’s your day, get the dress you really want x

cowsaysmoo · 01/11/2022 13:14

Where are you based OP? I know a fantastic bridal shop in Kent with second hand and ex sample dresses: www.bridesdressrevisited.com/
I got my dress there, 100% silk for £400. And the owner is super nice and helpful.

They used to do online appointments and posting dresses to try, not sure if they still do.
If you're not close to Kent, maybe you could try to find a similar store in your area?

cowsaysmoo · 01/11/2022 13:14

Btw, love the dress you posted!

Sandals12 · 01/11/2022 17:23

Hi and thanks everyone. Not sure about meal yet, I'm now thinking to just elope..the two of us, so we can at least enjoy meal and stay a couple of nights somewhere.

I read somewhere how someone is usually a size 10 but had to choose an 8 so might be too big. I'm based in n. Ireland.

@Anyfeckinusername yes my thoughts exactly, being tall helps the look of that dress I think.
