How do I make my cat swallow a worming tablet?

I've tried hiding them in bits of meat, crushing them up and putting them in his food, everything! Everytime he manages to eat around them. Does anyone have any tips for getting a cat to swallow a tablet?

Squirty cream.

We always let our son do it, he does the open mouth one and it takes him seconds. Mind you this is the child that some alpacas treated him as their leader

Open mouth
Pop in pill
Hold muzzle closed
Stroke under chin

This makes the animal swallow.

I remember my dad doing this on our DC 40 years ago and there being claws all over the place. It wasn’t pretty.

Put it I some lick e licks , my old cat asks for his blood pressure meds every morning now !

One of us holds her and very gently opens her mouth then the other drops it in and makes sure she's upright whilst swallowing it so she doesn't choke.

This is my experience.

Lick e licks has worked for my very spiky, pill-resistant cat, who even the vet struggled with. Works like an absolute charm.

Little balls of liver pate.

It's not that they don't know its there, it's that after the second tasty little snack, they've decided it's worth the hit for the third.

Sadly not.

My grandmother had this issue with her cat. Her friend who came round for a cup of tea and a chat once a week used to help. Until the cat would hear the car come up the road, recognise it as the friend's cat, and bolt under the sofa!

friend's car!

Some of our cats would take tablets embedded in pate - vet advised when we had a cat who needed to take tablets twice a day for a thyroid problem - worked a treat, and he used to ask for his pate.

Only works with cats who will wolf it down. If they're going to delicately lick at it, they'll just leave a soggy tablet behind and reward you with resentful looks.

I gave up trying to give my cat tablets hidden in food a long time ago! I have to catch her, wrap her like a baby in a towel or blanket, and prise open her jaws. Helps if you have a pill dispenser (vets have these) to get it into the back of their mouth more easily.

I use spot ons for my pair but every quarter - I give a worming and flea tablet each to clear out any potential survivors from previous doses.

Take a small ramekin and grind the tablet into a bit of a fine powder, mix with primula cheese, lift cat and smear cheese across one of the front paws per treatment. . The cats instinct is to lick themselves clean.

I use left paw for wormer / right for fleas and have my supplies set up before going near the cats. It's a bit messy and let them go and lie down for 5 mins to lick the cheese off. Offer a blob of primula before and afters. It's seen as a real treat.

When doing spot ons, I tend to apply when they are eating. I take out my tube of primula and a couple of blobs on a plate each. Have everything ready to go and little strokes of the back of their necks while they indulge in cheese and done.

I've used these techniques for several neighbours cats some of whom are very bitey, they can't resist the cheese especially the cheese and ham ones.

Its only a small amount of cheese so it doesn't do any big harm and it's a real treat occasion. My pair haven't realised that the cheese only comes out for this. When I touch it in the fridge, there is major excitement. .

I cut the tablet into smaller bits then pop each bit into a piece of a cat stick treat.
In the past I have, after grilling bacon, left the fat to cool and harden then cover the pieces of tablet in bacon fat. Works a treat!

My cat has to have 4 tablets a day, the pill popper linked by a PP is brilliant. It's so routine now she doesn't even run away after the first one.

Lick-e-Lix! Crush the tablet well between two teaspoons. Put a layer of lick-e-lix on the bottom of food bowl, carefully scrape crushed tablet on top and there you go. If they miss any bits, squirt a bit more over them. Never fails with mine.
