If you found money in the floor….

What would you do with it?

For context DP found £70 while walking our dog… he’s racked with guilt. I’m not, my main thought was ‘who carries £70 cash!’ (I’m lucky to have a £1 for the shopping trolly!)…. I have made several morally savvy suggestions about what we should do with the find!.. but I just wondered what others would do given it’s a bit more than finding loose change!

Lots of ppl carry cash! Especially older folk! I would be feeling bad that an older person may have lost it. That could be their money for the week 😩

LadyHelenaJustina · 31/10/2022 19:36

When we found about £40, we handed it into the police. We got it back a month later when it wasn’t claimed.

Ringbling85 · 31/10/2022 19:36

As for what I would do? Possibly put a vague notice on the local Facebook page if possible?

UserNameNameNameUser · 31/10/2022 19:36

Hand it in to the police station. If it’s not claimed then you get to keep it and also feel saintly 😇

AnnieSnap · 31/10/2022 19:38

I would let the police know using the website. Then if the person reports the loss, you can hand it in at the Police station (are there still any?) for them to collect. If no one reports the loss with a period of time (not sure what), you get to keep it anyway.

Mummieslncorporated · 31/10/2022 19:39

I would try to find the owner. I would post on local Facebook groups that I had found an amount of money, and if people could tell me the exact amount and roughly where they think they lost it then I would return it to them. I don't have a police station local to me to hand it in to, but if I had no response then the next time I was near one, I would hand it in.

The people I know that use cash are mostly those that can least afford to lose it. They use cash because they can't overspend.

Dippydonky · 31/10/2022 19:40

I have suggested Facebook (he’s not on it so that’s my job), mentioned police, and I’ve said if no one claims it it can be donated to charity. I did less seriously mention a take away… in a failed attempt to lighten the mood.

How about putting a (vague) post on your local facebook page asking if anyone has lost something down by the river? If genuine any person who had lost the mkney should be able to tell you an amount and denomination. If you don't anything in a teasonable length of time it's yours to keep.

Idbemonica1 · 31/10/2022 19:42

River 🤣🤣🤣. Your partner may take a different route to me. I walk my dog down the river.

purplecorkheart · 31/10/2022 19:43

I regularly find money and bank cards to the point it is a standing family joke. Cash I nearly always hand into a local police station. Bank cards I tend to post in the letter box of the bank they are from or again the Police Station. I also check facebook to see if the area has a local facebook page and post there to advise that I found a not specified sum of money and it was handed in to whatever Police Station.

I lost a wallet in University with a sum of money I had just taken out of the bank to pay for something related to my course. A kind soul handed it into student services and they traced me and I am very very grateful to them still

codehelp · 31/10/2022 19:58

Police, for sure.

Someone somewhere could be tearing their hair off, how could you possibly enjoy it?

And they give it back to you if it's unclaimed.

Tiredmum100 · 31/10/2022 20:03

I'd try and find the owner. I couldn't keep £70. That could be all someone has for the next few weeks. I'd take it to the police station or out something on Facebook/ next door neighbour app.

Georgeskitchen · 31/10/2022 20:14

Regular posts on local Facebook groups about people losing large amounts of money, I just don't get how folk can be so careless!!

orbitalcrisis · 31/10/2022 20:32

My friend handed several hundred pounds into the police, it was never claimed. They said he could have it, he waited. He called again and they said they had sent a cheque, but refused to send another. He complained to the chief superintendent who agreed to send another cheque, he did not. My friend gave up.

Random789 · 31/10/2022 20:37

Definitely hand it into the police.

ohforthelife · 31/10/2022 20:47

It's mostly elderly people who carry cash, so yes I would feel bad about it. I'd put a post on the local fb page saying "has anyone lost anything in X street?" and see if anyone pipes up.

junebirthdaygirl · 31/10/2022 21:00

I lost my wallet recently with all my cards/ drivers licence etc. A guy found them and went to huge trouble to deliver them back to me. I was so grateful as replacing them would have been a pain and actually l hadn't realised they were gone so someone could have been using my card. .
Hand the money into the police station and make someone's day!!

UserNameNameNameUser · 31/10/2022 21:05

Just adding, don’t just do Facebook. By all means use Facebook as an extra, but please hand it in to the police.

A large and increasing number of people don’t have Facebook, whereas most people know to check with the police if they have lost something like that.

RunningFromInsanity · 31/10/2022 21:08

I would put a message on Facebook and if not claimed then I would keep it.

MissPoldark · 31/10/2022 21:17

I’m not sure about the Facebook idea.
what’s a reasonable length of time?
if nobody claims/comes forward for a month so you then spend the money, what will you do if someone sees the post later and gets in touch?

I could just imagine it leading to conflict.

RainingYetAgain · 31/10/2022 21:26

I followed a cyclist down the main road, and the bits of paper flying out of his pocket turned out to be £10 notes. I collected 4. I had blown my horn when I saw what was happening but he ignored me. I tried to follow him but took the wrong side road at a junction. Retraced my strps but couldn't find him.
I explained the circumstances on FB and NextDoor -no response
Put a notice up in the local pub, spoke to the guy who was a Mr Fixit and looked after the recreation ground etc -he knew what happened in the village.. After a couple of days, I rang the Police who had no record of it being lost. They told me not to hand it in at a Police station as it would not be returned to me if unclaimed, but took my details and said after 28 days it would be mine. This was late 2019.
I also drove down the same road at the same time for the next 2 or 3 Saturdays.
I gave it to charity in the end.
Notify the Police, try Facebook/NextDoor

Dippydonky · 31/10/2022 21:38

@RainingYetAgain good to know I can call the police. I’ve just found out our local one closed & my car is in the garage so getting to the nearest is a pain (it’s a 20 min drive, but harder still with no car!)

I’ll carefully word a post for Facebook - loads of people are on the group and it can be a lovely group but as with all things people are people so some people can be quite negative.

It's not just old people with cash.
