Drying laundry outside - when do you stop?

When do you stop pegging laundry to dry outside?

I just brought in a load of towels I had pegged out late morning and they still feel as wet as when they came out of the machine, only colder!

Is it still worth pegging them out when it's dry? It's not been very windy today so maybe that's not helped?

It's the first winter I've had a proper garden instead of a balcony so I'm not sure if it's worth bothering?! We've not had the heating on really as it's not felt cold enough inside so worried they'll take ages (even with the dehumidifier on). Thanks

All you year round. I got two loads dried today.

CathyorClaire · 31/10/2022 21:01

All year round forecast depending. It also often goes out overnight and gets darked on 😁

If it's still damp when I bring it in it finishes off overnight on airers. I very rarely and only begrudgingly use my quarter-of-a-century-plus old tumble dryer.

cimena · 31/10/2022 21:44

i am that neighbour who leaves it on the line until it’s dry, whether or not it gets one or more rain rinse.

exceptions are made if something needs worn or if it’s nearly there and I’m ironing so I can iron it dry.

I don’t. Mine goes out all year round as long as the patio is dry. However, it has to be out by 8am and in by 2.30pm in the middle of winter as by 2.30 the temperature starts dropping and the air moisture rises again.

megletthesecond · 31/10/2022 22:02

Never.
Another frozen laundry fan here. I like holding trousers upside down and the legs staying up.

mamakoukla · 31/10/2022 22:03

All year, as long as it isn’t raining. Yes, it freezes at -20 C but still dries. Magic!

User17956743 · 31/10/2022 22:04

All year round if there is a bit of a breeze, though we are coming up to the foggy time of year now and it won't dry then

KateMcCallister · 31/10/2022 22:31

I've stopped because it seems to rain daily atm. If it's a dry day I will still peg stuff out, it's not that cold yet and if there's a breeze things will at least part dry

NorthernChinchilla · 31/10/2022 22:46

I've been converted to outside drying. Couldn't be doing with the faff of a line though, so realised I could put it on (non heated) airer and stick it outside. When it gets dark, in it comes, no bother with pegging out etc. and it stays on the airer till done.
Fortunate to live on a hill, and the side of the house is like a wind tunnel. And the neighbours at the side have an enormous standard holly which acts as a rain cover. So summer it's in the sun, winter at the side if the house.
Can't leave it out overnight tho, bloody foxes would eat the lot Grin

I've told this story before but my neighbour hung out her washing on Christmas Eve and brought it in in February Grin

AlwaysLatte · 31/10/2022 23:09

When it's been out all day and still damp in the evening I put the rotary line away for the winter.

Nanalisa60 · 31/10/2022 23:19

I put it out all year , double spin, then stick it out !! BBC weather app is great I decided at nine pm if I’m putting a wash on for the next morning if it says no rain then I put it out usually 8am till 2.30pm . I just love a dry windy day (a good drying day) . Then if still a little damp air on radiators or finish off in tumble dry for a few mins.

InTheFutilityRoomEatingBiscuits · 31/10/2022 23:22

I never stop pegging out.

I peg out then it stays out till it’s dry. However long that is.

RewildingAmbridge · 31/10/2022 23:22

Got three loads done and dry today (well DH did), it rained this afternoon but am got done this morning, it's been about 18 here and breezy.
I hang out all year, if it's dry they'll dry, if it's above 5/6 degrees as long as you have a bit of breeze it'll be fine

Inmyhandbag · 31/10/2022 23:26

Thanks to neighbour's trees my garden is in shade all day at this time of year, so unless it's really windy I don't bother hanging it outside as it has no chance of drying.

Chrissywakeuup · 31/10/2022 23:26

I find running another spin cycle before putting it out gets rid of any access water and helps. Im also going to try drying outside all year round this time, see where it gets me.

Usually I stop at the end of September and start again at the end of March. This year it’s been so mild I am still hanging it out on windy days and drying it in the dryer for a short while. If I hang it indoors it is still damp a week later as the heating has been mostly off.

I do that too!

mackthepony · 01/11/2022 00:58

I put the clothes maiden outside and move it so it's in the sun for as much as possible throughout the day

Once it's dark/ raining or whatever I just move the maiden indoors.

Saves rehanging

Wherediditallgo · 02/11/2022 09:07

It doesn’t matter if you can’t get the washing 100% dry outside! Even getting it halfway dry is saving the energy of a tumble dryer or keeping moisture out of the house.

Snugglemonkey · 02/11/2022 09:30

I hang washing out all year round. It doesn't dry properly when it is very cold but I just take it and tumble dry in the evening. It dries very quickly.

JasperJohnsPaintbrush · 02/11/2022 10:15

Mines going out this morning in around 10 mins. I've never ever had a tumble drier - have always line dried. If they're still damp when I bring them in, then I pop them on the airer overnight.
I give everything a good shake, and put my tops onto clothes hangers before hanging out - really saves on ironing, which I've not done for the past 20+ years.

AriettyHomily · 02/11/2022 14:20

Nothing irritates more than hanging it out when it won't dry and having to rearrange it inside! If it's sunny I'll put it in a clothes horse so just bring it in. This is the first week here in the SE when it hasn't been warm enough to dry.

NoisyOliveBiscuit · 05/04/2026 15:27

All year round, I use DryTime website first thing. On bad days, dehumidifier indoors.
