Does childcare in Canada really only cost $10 per day?!?

ThreeFeetTall · 31/10/2022 13:51

I listened to the recent Woman's Hour discussion about childcare and they said this- $10 per day childcare for ages 0-12. Started in Quebec and now being rolled out to the rest of the country.

I just couldn't believe it! Our nursery in UK costs £70 per day!

Is anyone in Canada able to confirm this? I've googled and it seems to be true but I know from the Uk that things aren't always the same in reality (eg '30 free hours' doesn't always mean that)

Dunno, but a German woman told me that no one in Germany pays more than 200 euros a month for childcare. ( that was a few years ago so may be more now).
I think in the UK we have the second most expensive childcare in Europe. It’s a bloody outrage frankly.

Onesailwait · 31/10/2022 14:00

It's a measure the Federal Government are proposing. Each Province or Territory would have to sign up. It's flawed in a number if ways. I believe they want it to come into place by 2026. I'm in BC I pay $800 a month just for after school care. This summer child care cost me around $5000. It's certainly not affordable.

How much would you like to pay?

It's very cheap in Spain too. No-one pays more than about 150 euro a month, or that was the case a few years ago when my friend's baby was in nursery there.

However, it obviously doesn't cost this amount to provide, so is heavily subsidised by the government (or employers?) so the cost is borne by society not the actual users of the services.

Some countries may also have staff to child ratios or facilities etc that some UK parents may find unacceptable.

In European countries where the ratios are higher the staff are higher qualified and trained, plus have higher salaries.

In Germany, the cost of daycare varies between federal states. We spent some time in Berlin and only had to pay for food at our kids’ daycare - €23 per month.

AriettyHomily · 31/10/2022 14:36

Even that €23 must be heavily subsidised!

Arayes · 31/10/2022 14:44

If you want such things, you need to pay proper taxes. You have a low tax conservative economy, you can't afford mass subsidised childcare.

Canadians pay less tax.

ThreeFeetTall · 31/10/2022 14:49

@Onesailwait ah that's a shame- sounds expensive like here

And very expensive childcare, right now. This new idea is just that. An idea.

ThreeFeetTall · 31/10/2022 14:50

Yes would have to be subsidised but the person speaking seemed to imply this was balanced out by increased productivity?

Not in QC. Not just an idea. Not sure what you pay in the ROC but it's actually $8.70 per day in QC.

We put our two kids through daycare here in QC and it was around $160 PER MONTH, per child. I cannot praise the system enough. It enabled me to work, continue my career.

You don't want to know about Sweden's childcare and parental policies OP...

gogohmm · 31/10/2022 15:03

It varies around the world but in some cases eg France there is cheap state childcare but nowhere near enough places for all so in reality people pay a lot more. Some countries have significantly higher taxes, both direct and indirect. Ultimately we need to balance the books

Itisbetter · 31/10/2022 15:04

Max childcare cost £266 per month (less depending on household income) for 2 dc

Childcare open from 6am to 18.30 from 1year old

DS used to go to an afterschool club in Germany from ages 7 to nearly 10. It cost us 5 Euros per year! They had a lovely outdoor area, kitchen with baking, organized games, a music room, woodwork room, hammocks, climbing tower, scooters, film evenings, a massive inflatable, etc. And trained staff. It was fantastic.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 31/10/2022 17:36

@YeahmetooJill Berlin: Since 1.8.2018 childcare for DC of Kindergarten age is free except for 23 € food (unless exempt)
After school care (usually Year 1 until Year 4) is means tested and starts at 109 € / month

QuentininQuarantino · 31/10/2022 18:11

In Spain it’s subsidized to about 200€ a month and free from after age 2.

It obviously comes from tax but so does school so I don’t understand the argument that people don’t want to pay for other people’s children.

paying for other people’s childcare through tax enables women to go back to work which creates a more equal, fairer society for everyone. Economies have been proven to be healthier when women work. Also, early years are considered important and if your tax is paying for education anyway, why start at 4/5?

Wow so it's true!

Thanks for the replies. 5 euro a year wins I think! Cant see the system here getting any more generous any time soon

At the moment we are paying very high taxes, and get fuck all back in services.

We're now being asked to pay even higher taxes and get less back.

I started this recently, interesting to see the responses on here in terms of how much other governments subsidise it.
