www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/video/2022/oct/31/the-town-where-brexit-died-but-hope-survives-video
Interviewer: Who how do you feel about [Brexit and the election] now? Fisherman: Well, I won't vote for anybody.
That is why the people who caused this win again and again. There's only one other party that can credibly form a government, and when they refuse to speak the truth the problem will just get worse without any political will to fix it.

Then again: "They're all the same" isn't true either. Brexit and all those other problems are not natural disasters. They are the result of deliberate political choices, both by the electorate and the people in charge. Some parties and their policies are a better choice than others.
People are often resistant to change, but when your town is run down because the industry that you depended on has gone then it's either change or die and the problem was that they were too eager to listen to liars like Farage and Johnson that claimed that the fishing industry would come back than to face reality and embrace something else. They had the opportunity to be a key centre for offshore wind energy, but they were looking at the past instead of the future.
It's a struggle for all Northern towns because no Tory government is ever going to fund them unless their votes are for sale (and even then, not by anywhere near what the town needs), but do you know who would have funded the town's development? The EU. With no political skin in the game and an intention of just improving the economies of all members the EU would have funded Grimsby's development, but they didn't want that. They wanted the fishing industry back and now they have nothing.

June Mummery is a Brexit campaigner for fisherpeople in Lowestoft, Suffolk. She never stopped believing in Brexit but feels her community has been betrayed. Brexit isn't the problem, but being neglected by political elites (yet again) is problem (she'd say). I dare say her recent "whinging" matches that of any "Remoaner". Also, Brexit had very strong support in Kent, anti-immigrant place.

Brexit happened because of lots of places.

I’d be incredibly surprised if Lia Nici gets re-elected in Grimsby. I know lots of people who voted for her last time and none who plan to this time. She’s going to get slaughtered at the next election.

@BiasedBinding Are you going to try the rice pudding?

Tesco should be open by now, to get the ingredients. 🙂

Tesco may well be open but there's a good chance they won't have any of the ingredients. If they do the prices will be rising faster than they can reprint the shelf label. Obviously nothing at all to do with Brexit though, no, no, no.

That "benefits of Brexit" document is absolutely fucking hilarious. Apparently we've resolved all the immigration issues, as well as, erm, putting little crown symbols back on pint glasses (hint: the EU never banned them).

I see someone is taking advantage of the 'people who liked this thread also liked this thread' feature this morning.

Oh crap I didn't even look at the OP date, just the ones before mine!

I thank God for the cuts in red tape every time I post gifts to family in EU countries. I mean before I had to go to a post office/ book a courier online and send it just as I would to the UK. Now we have the Brexit benefit of less red tape I have forms to fill in too. That's why I now get stuff delivered directly by a company in the EU. I made the mistake this year of getting a UK company to send a gift direct but it cost the recipient duty so I won't do that again.

OldMotherHubbardsCat · 05/12/2022 08:42

@SqueakyDinosaur putting little crown symbols back on pint glasses (hint: the EU never banned them).

I don't think anyone said they did ?

In 2006, EU legislation implemented the CE mark as the mark of an accurate measure on pint glasses. This meant all glasses had to bear the CE mark, but the EU rules did not ban the crown symbol, and the EU did not order the UK to remove it. It was technically allowed under the rules if used in a decorative way rather than as a marker of accuracy.

So why is it in an ACTUAL GOVERNMENT REPORT as a Brexit benefit then?

<ooh, is that scratchy sound the scraping of the bottom of the barrel, or is there yet more shit to come?>

OldMotherHubbardsCat · 05/12/2022 09:08

@SqueakyDinosaur So why is it in an ACTUAL GOVERNMENT REPORT as a Brexit benefit then?

Why not ask your MP ? - www.writetothem.com/

SqueakyDinosaur · 05/12/2022 09:11

Because my MP is Labour, sensible, and thinks Brexit was a very stupid idea. HTH.

OldMotherHubbardsCat · 05/12/2022 09:17

@SqueakyDinosaur I thought for a minute you wrote your MP was old, Labour and senile which would fit.😂

It means that it can now be used as a benchmark for measure not just for decoration.

Hahaha the lone desperate “brexit supporter” frantically posting loads of random links on these threads always seems a sign that things are going well Grin

Wait till Clav turns up

SerendipityJane · 05/12/2022 09:46

Oh crap I didn't even look at the OP date, just the ones before mine!

Don't worry. We have decades of this to come.

SqueakyDinosaur · 05/12/2022 12:18

Your failure of comprehension does not invalidate my point, nor validate yours, @OldMotherHubbardsCat . You are still talking out of your arse. We are poorer and less influential in the world as a direct result of Brexit.

antelopevalley · 05/12/2022 12:24

Interesting the poster who posted lots of links about how fishing is going really well post Brexit.
I remember during the Thatcher years some Tory papers had articles about how prosperity was booming in my region. Maybe true for a few rich people. But this propaganda does not work as people living in these places are not stupid.
The fishermen know their industry is dying. Those who have lived there for years can see the difference in the number of boats coming in and the amount of money being spent on shops.
It is why propaganda only works with some people who do not live in these areas so do not know what ios really happening.
