27 and feel like life is passing me by

Im 27 and just feel like 5 minutes ago I was 22 and time is going so fast. I went to college and studied media, photography and loved it but due to personal circumstances didn’t complete my course which is a huge regret. I didn’t go on to uni due to this and instead just started working in a local hospital doing admin. I’ve worked here for 6 years now and have worked up from band 2 to band 4 but it’s still just admin and I don’t find it fulfilling or enjoyable. It’s not been a total waste as I’ve got my life together apart from a career, I have a lovely husband and two young boys but feel like life is just slipping away from me and I still have no idea what to do and have no qualifications higher than GCSE as a starting point. I love to write and have a few novels I’d like to self publish but never have the confidence, I also love photography and would love to set myself up as a newborn/maternity/family photographer but I’d have a lot to learn to be good enough and there’s quite a few locally and it’s the initial investment that feels scary. I just don’t know what to do or where to go. I look into being a teacher and everyone says it’s underpaid and miserable. I just don’t know where to start and I don’t want to be 37 and still doing something I don’t enjoy? Has anyone been here? How do you figure it out?

You obviously know a bit about photography.
Maybe you could set up a small business on the side. Start small. Start with people you know at a discount. Keep your day job or drop your hours. Maybe do another photography course. Don’t be put off by other businesses. Hopefully you can grow it slowly and steadily.

Thank you. I took loads of lovely photos of my baby in the style I'd like to do professionally and keep going to make an Instagram for them but it feels embarrassing if it doesn't take off! I have zero confidence which is an issue for a career like that I guess.

27 is so young and you've already achieved a lot. You also sound like you have a good idea of what you want to do but maybe just don't know where to start or have the confidence. Can you break it down into little steps?

Panic not - I gave up years of social work - jumped off the wheel and took up photography after doing City and Guilds at night school. Oh - and by the way I was 50 at the time!!!

The key to being successful at it was networking, meeting people, getting my name out there. Because I had worked for SS, some work came in photographing children for adoption "catalogues." I met someone who worked for a media company and managed to wriggle my way in there as a magazine picture editor and photographer. They also had me taking fly-on-the-wall photos of filming projects - my photos became the posters. As people got to know me, I did lots of other things: photographing craft workshops, running photo workshops for elderly people, those with mental health problems etc.

Alongside this I was also using my musical skills running a choir, singing workshops, and a big singing project for Three Choirs Festival, and a youth arts outreach project.

Between all of this I made a reasonable living.

I also did abstract photography and had a grant from the Arts Council to put these onto light boxes and these were displayed in galleries round my region. I would never have thought of applying to the Arts Council, nor thought I would have stood a chance but was encouraged to do it by the local gallery. I did not make any money on this, but enjoyed it.

Honestly you just need to put yourself out there - make yourself a portfolio, create a website for yourself, bung all the info on facebook etc. And you need to have faith in yourself so you come across as competent.

School or pre-school photography is a non-starter as the big chains have these all sewn up.

Take the plunge! - pm me if it would help. Good luck!

Okay totally off topic but I never knew a catalogue existed of children waiting for adoption. 😮
