Is your year 1 child done in?

Mine is absolutely hopeless. We're just starting half term here, and since Thursday it's been tears, general sadness and hysteria.

She denies any problems, we had parents evening last week and it was grand, no issues academically or with friendships etc.

I'm assuming she's just exhausted from the work ramping up from reception, and I'm hoping half term will be a reset. Is anyone else in the same position? She's my PFB so I've no experience if this is normal or not.

Yes, much more tired than last year. The move into year 2 will be easier again though.

Yes, mine is the same. We're at the end of half term here but by the end of half term she was practically crawling into school each day, so tired and fed up. It's a big change for them. Hope your DC has a lovely recharge over half term.

I’m a Y1 teacher. Our provision remains very play based but it is still totally normal for the kids to be absolutely hanging at this point of the year. IME next half term is also tough then it improves after Christmas. And is bad again at the end of the summer term!

My Y5 and Y3 have just finished half term and they've basically slept all week. And in theory they should have far better stamina than your Y1! It's awful this term, it is the same every year, by Christmas they are completely fucked.

Absolutely normal. I don’t have kids but have taught y1 for the last few years. It’s a shock to their system, going from the free flow of reception to a more formal learning style - though I would assume they still at some provision in place at this point in the year. They can be a bit tired and emotional bless them. Usually - up to about feb half term - they are absolutely done in class by 2pm. I always tried to have something like art on a Friday afternoon as they are absolutely shattered by the end of the week.

When I’ve had parents evening I’ve had many parents say they’re grumpy little ratbags at home, when they’re perfect at school all day! It’s like they just release everything once they walk out of the gate. It’s because you’re their safe place where they can let it all out.

stamina will increase, you normally see a massive change by Easter, they mature so much!

We're just coming to the end of half term. This time last week my Y1 child was hideous with tiredness. He put himself to bed a full hour earlier than his regular bedtime. Even my normally infatiguable Y3 was grouchy and snappy last week.

I'm sorry that lots of your dc are feeling the same way, but also relieved to know it's quite normal. I'm going in for a low key half term and I hope to get my beautiful dd returned to me, and this weird zombie child taken away 😂
