Girls aged 9 & 10, time for their own room

I have 2 dds who share a room at the moment, we have a playroom which we planned to use as a room for 1 eventually... Dd2 drives dd1 bonkers after lights out... Should we just give up the playroom now, dd1 is dying for her own room dd2 isn't... What age did yours stop sharing at & what are the advantages/disadvantages of own rooms?

If one of them is dying for their own room then it is definitely time. Our kids stopped sharing as soon as we moved into a house with a 3rd bedroom, so ages 3 and 5.

are the rooms even in size? is the playroom often used for playing?

it sounds like they would benefit from their own space, especially if they are winding each other up. So if you have enough room, then this could be a good time for new bedrooms.

Mine have never shared. I see the benefits to sharing but if one is being wound up by the other and you have a spare room, you should definitely separate them. They can still play in the rooms.

Mine stopped at 8&6. The 8yo needed a quiet haven from her exuberant younger sister.

They like going for "sleepovers" in the school holidays still at 9&11.

Definitely before one starts their periods.

Yes it’s time - she’s nearly at secondary school at which point she needs a quiet place to do homework.

No because they're so busy with school, activities & playing out on the green with their friends it's rarely used basically a storage space for the toys...

If the playroom is upstairs then split them. I can't see much argument not to if the playroom is little used. If splitting them means one child sleeping downstairs it's a bit more complicated.

Children play in their bedrooms too, probably all the more so if they have their own, and playrooms have a habit of becoming overgrown toy cupboards.

ReadyForPumpkins · 30/10/2022 06:12

The playroom isn’t used so there isn’t any point having it is it? Let them have their toys in their own rooms.

I got two DDs but a larger age gap. They never shared a bedroom. The younger has the smaller one. Now DD1 is in year 7, it’s very useful she does her homework in her room.

grey12 · 30/10/2022 06:30

At that age they shouldn't need a separate playroom as much 🤷🏻‍♀️ since you have the space, give them their individual rooms 😉

BuffaloCauliflower · 30/10/2022 06:34

I never had my own room until I left home. Just wasn’t an option. If you have another room and one doesn’t want to share anymore then makes sense to split them.

StrictlyJowita · 30/10/2022 06:35

My youngest always had the biggest bedroom as she was the more outgoing one and she had more toys too. That way they could play on there and my oldest could retreat into her room when she wanted,

SavingsThreads · 30/10/2022 06:52

Why are they sharing if you've room for them to be separate, they don't use the playroom, and one doesn't like the situation? Why have you kept them together

thelobsterquadrille · 30/10/2022 07:10

It makes no sense to me that the older one is asking for her own room, you have a room that's not being used and yet you're still making her share with her younger sister!

Yes, she needs to have her own room.
