Why do I feel nauseous every evening?

Has anyone had this and got to the bottom of it?

been going on for months, pretty much every evening from around 4pm-ish I start to feel a bit sick. Doesn’t seem to make much difference how much, when or what I eat. I don’t feel like I am actually going to be sick, just a horrible nausea that lasts until I go to sleep and is gone in the morning.

obviously if it continues I’ll go to the GP, but I tend to find them monumentally crap at this type of vague issue so trying to do what I can for myself first, or at least come up with some ideas to discuss with them

TIA

Have you had your eyes tested? Some visual problems, not just short/long sight but eyes with different prescriptions, or a change in your current glasses prescription, can cause this type of issue. If you’re constantly scrolling screens on phones and computers all day, this can literally cause a form of seasickness from the eye strain.

May also be worth checking your inner ear function as this can cause dizziness and nausea.

Other thoughts: perhaps there’s an environmental cause, carbon monoxide exposure in your workplace perhaps, or maybe you’re sensitive to traffic fumes or the chemicals in your office. Also that go-to one size fits all explanation from GPs everywhere: stress, well known for switching off your gut.

TL;DR: first, get your eyes thoroughly tested, especially if you work with screens (work will help with this). Check your workstation position and take screen breaks. Second, get outside for a break, a walk and some fresh air. If things don’t then improve see the GP to rule out anything serious.

Do you have a carbon monoxide alarm in your house?

Thanks for these ideas

carbon monoxide meters in the house and all fine there

I do work on a screen and don’t always put my reading glasses on, maybe experiment with that - although I have it today and not been on a screen all day. Except to post on MN in last few hours!

I've been struggling with nausea for a while now which was worse in the evenings. I switched to a lactose free diet last week and after a few days the nausea has gone and not come back. I didn't realise how much milk I was consuming in things.

pre menopause, it was well known in my family that I needed tea and a biscuit/ light snack at or before 4pm. - low blood sugar! Otherwise I looked very ill and felt headachy, tired, vomited and generally was snappy. Didn’t matter that I had eaten breakfast and lunch, I needed that sugary hit to be able to power through to dinner and bed.

[Disclaimer: I am not medically trained but had a similar issue for years and went through the following tests.]

Have you had your bloods done at the gp op?

That would show up any potentially problems with liver, maybe gallbladder, or some other issus like Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection, or viruses, diabetes, or something else?

You could also have a test for celiac disease or allergies? Maybe even parasites?

You could try antacids in case you have some sort of reflux like GERD or hiatus hernia or similar.

You could also try a course of good probiotics.

Anxiety or stress?

Could it be too tight bras or waistbands? Poor posture at your desk?

My issue turned out to be hormone related though. I was on the pill and sometimes that can cause nausea in itself. But my problem was with my womb and ovaries which I eventually had to have removed. Immediately that happened, all the nausea and other digestive problems disappeared.

Good luck finding out what it is op. It's miserable feeling nauseous all the time. Flowers

Interesting in the pre menopause/hormonal suggestion - I have a referral just arranged due to very irregular periods, night sweats occasionally…
