Smart meter / power cuts

For some reason we never got round to having a smart meter installed, I was about to start the process when I had a thought: if power cuts are to happen during the winter, won’t they use smart meters to do it? In which case we would be spared if we are still on an old style meter.

Surly they won’t cut the power globally in areas as that might be unsafe (public lights, traffic lights, banks, etc).

I don’t know anything about the electricity network though, maybe I’m completely wrong… what is everybody’s understanding?

When power cuts last happened regularly (during the 1980s miner's strike), they were done district by district, and yes street lights, traffic lights etc. went out. So, not having a 'smart' meter, won't protect you from power cuts.

I don’t have a smart meter, but nobody had one in the 80s and there were still cuts, so I can’t see that it would make a difference.

Not having a smart meter won't matter they are turning off districts at a time if they do it.

i Had a similar thought recently as have been bombarded with my Smart Meter being ready for installation.

I don’t want or need one and I know it’s to the utility providers benefit.

Power comes from the national grid, if it’s going to be switched off they literally switch it off at the grid. Smart meter or not, you’ll be getting a power cut.

I think this how they will do it. There would be health and safety implications of cutting street lights, traffic lights etc. In they'll be way to scared of that to turn everything off. I live very close to a major hospital, of course they have backups, but I can't see them just cutting the power to it. Smart meters would absolutely be the way to selectively cut people off, while leaving those considered more vulnerable switched on. Very happy with my dumb meter at the moment thanks.
