Only Curls - or similar products.

Has anyone used them, or can recommend?

I have longish (bra strap length) hair. It's not thick as such but there's a lot of it. It has a definite wave snd I've recently discovered that if I let ot dry naturally and dont brush it, it's very definitely bordering on curly. I'm keen to try and embrace the wave but not sure if this sort of product is worth the investment especially given how expensive they are.

I am a convert to Only Curls. I've tried not to be because of the expense, and have stopped twice to use other things, but gone back both times because I'm not getting the results with anything else. You can get the trial pack of the 4 main products (shampoo, conditioner, creme and gel) for about £30 and see if you like it before shelling out for the full size one.

Myjobisanightmare · 28/10/2022 17:53

I haven’t used them yet but they’re on my radar to have a go with

minis aren great value for money but there’s a huge amount of trial and error in getting products that suit your curls ie I have fine hair so I avoid anything heavy greasy oily it just weighs my hair down so I’d recommend just buying small

only curl does minis as does curlsmith

AffIt · 28/10/2022 17:58

I have Type 3B/C curls (natural S-shaped ringlets) and as a product junkie, I'd go for Only Curls over Curlsmith, having tried both.

I use the curl cleanser, conditioner and gel on a 'full' wash day (I don't bother with the curl creme - it was one product too many for my hair). If I'm just giving it a bit of a rinse after the gym or whatever, I use the cleanser and the volumising mousse from Flora & Curl (I think OC does a mousse too, but I haven't tried it). I just have water in a spray bottle to floof it up after sleeping.

I noticed the trial pack is half the price of full size which is expensive. Another issue I have is an itchy scalp. I bought the "Give me" shampoo conditioner and hair mask and couldn't use the shampoo.

Any advice on non wash days? How to sleep with it?

It's def not full on curly, but when I recently left it to dry and went out, a couple of people said "I didn't realise you had curly hair!"

I just bought the only curls trial pack with the 4 little bottles for £30.

I have quite fine 2a wavy hair and only curls conditioner and leave in conditioner are too greasy and rich for me. I imagine they would be brilliant for more curly hair or coarser hair than mine. The only curls shampoo is really clarifying- gets the hair squeaky clean.

I'll be mixing and matching the only curls in with other products I think to carry on experimenting. Overall though it think it is better for coarser, curlier hair than mine.

terrywynne · 28/10/2022 18:04

Good post OP! I have been seeing their adverts and wondering the same. I have also discovered that I have wavy hair - I used to think I didn't look good with long hair but I think it was brushed long hair that didn't look good!

However, even though I have tried some of the advice using cheaper products it doesn't quite seem to work. I get ringlets underneath but the top layer of hair is loose waves. It looks great when wet but still dries into a fizzy wavy mass rather than sleek defined waves with the result it still looks a bit like I haven't brushed. Wondering if more expensive products are the solution or my technique!

ImpossibleGirl · 28/10/2022 18:05

I have 2b curls. I find the Only Curls stuff is just too heavy for my hair. I need more protein and less shea butter / coconut oil.

Unfortunately I went all out and bought both the small and big sets (on offer) and now have to finish it off before I can move onto something else.

Definitely do a porosity check (there are a few online) and only go for Only Curls if you need more moisture than protein.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 28/10/2022 18:07

My hairdresser used the shampoo and conditioner and the gel on my hair last time I went. It was ok. The gel was drying - but then despite me telling him that, he didn’t use the curl cream before.

If your hair is more wavy, there’s a brand that caters for long waves merwave.co.uk/. My hair is way too curly for that but it might suit you.

The products I like are Bouclème curl cream then Aveda Confixor gel, they’re both quite light. Look Fantastic has just sent me a text for 25% off FLASH25 if anyone wants it - also use Honey and TopCashback for good deals.

(sorry that makes me sound like a bot but when I bought my hair stuff I got it all half price because of careful shopping)

LunaLoveFood · 28/10/2022 18:10

I've had the trial pack in a shopping basket for a few weeks as I can't decide whether to take the leap or not.
At the moment I've found the tea tree Alberto Balsam shampoo and conditioner with bed head curl Rock amplifier on 2c/3a hair which has been working well, but still tempted.

It's def not full on curly, but when I recently left it to dry and went out, a couple of people said "I didn't realise you had curly hair!"

I 'pineapple' it on top of my head with a silk scrunchie, then have a silk sleep bonnet (and a silk pillowcase - did I mention I'm a product junkie?!).

I take it down after a shower (I'll put a waterproof shower cap on top of the silkie), then spray it with water and fluff up the roots with my fingers (some people cool-diffuse, but I can't be bothered).

I can get three-four days out of a good prep and style day, BUT a good prep and style day can take two-three hours between washing, product application and air-drying, so I only really do it once a week.

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 28/10/2022 18:28

I bought the whole Only Curls set this week after a curl by curl cut. Today was the first use.

The gel is amazing. It's wet and not sticky so doesn't cause frizz.

The rest feels no better than Garnier hair food, which is half the price.

The only saving grace I found is a little goes a very long way, so the bottles will last a while.

Bemyclementine · 28/10/2022 18:30

So it seems my hair is low porosity - smooth fine hairs but lots of them- I definitely don't have "fine hair".

I'm not sure on the 2c, 3a etc.

If I put it in a pony tail I do end up with a big kink where the band was which is annoying when it's straight.

More than happy for cheaper suggestions, especially given my scalps hatred of most shampoos!

I have more wavy than curly hair and I find the cleanser and conditioner are great and then after washing I either use their gel or something called revive from lush which I also use on non wash days. I found the creme too much, not tried anything else from them

The only other stuff I have liked is maui which is sls/silicone free and you can get it in Superdrug and boots on offer a lot there are a few different ones but all have been good for my hair

1down · 28/10/2022 19:25

Have you tried noughty or imbue? Much cheaper and easily available

Sanch1 · 28/10/2022 19:33

Join 'sensible curly people uk' on Facebook and try the curly girl method. Lots of recommendations for products, routines and techniques.

flowerycurtain · 28/10/2022 19:38

My cheaper curly girl version:

Sainsbury's coconut conditioner (75p) mixed with a few drops of tea tree oil (cheapie B&M stuff). Scrub scalp with fingers till they hurt.

Bit more conditioner for luck.

Boots pink curl crème )2.50 a pot?) then diffuse dry.

Not as perfect results as when I go to the hairdresser but not by much

edin16 · 28/10/2022 19:39

I use a mixture of umberto giannini and cantu. They're both specially formulated for curly hair. Normal shampoos and conditioners aren't great for your curls because they stick to the hair and make it heavy, so you need to investigate which ones will work. They're not as cheap as an everyday shampoo but they're usually on offer in boots and things.
On none wash days I flip it over and use my fingers to brush it through then spray some water that I added some curl gel to into it and give it a good scrunch.

sueelleker · 28/10/2022 19:46

I'm 2B (and I didn't know about the different types till I read this post!) I've been using John Frieda Frizz-Ease Dream Curls for years, and never had any problems.

MapleLeafForever · 28/10/2022 19:49

I bought the small trial set for £30 and used it once and it's not worked with my hair at all - too thick and greasy and sticky, somehow.

now I'm not sure what to do with it! Too much money to get rid of, not even sure charity shop would take opened bottles, and so it's just sitting there, thinking I'll use it again some day

Chloefairydust · 28/10/2022 20:09

Anyone tried the only curls curl cream? Is it enough to define and style curls or do I need the cream gel too?

Brigante9 · 29/10/2022 10:13

I bought Flora and Curl, the Curl Activating Lotion and the Curl Defining Gel. I find I need a build up of the product over multiple days for it work and it’s really expensive. I moved away from using conditioner because of the build up causing what looked like dandruff 🤮 I think I’m going to go back to it, tho, because a bottle of eg Tresemme is £3/£4 compared to over £30 for the 2 products from Flora and Curl. If I wet my hair then wrap a towel round while I clean my face/teeth, then comb through conditioner, I get far more defined curls. Building up product is key, I find.
