Nurses - how do you make extra income?

My dc are growing so I can increase from part time, but I'm wondering whether to up my hours at work or do something else.

I don't especially fancy agency, botox and aesthetics seem saturated locally, I'm not sure of anything else I could do. Does anyone have another income stream directly related or adjacent to nursing they wouldn't mind sharing?

I’m a AHP but I do bank work in a mass vaccination centre.

Can you not work bank in a different dept? Less pressure because your not so involved and can let any politics wash over you, you might learn new skills or even find a better dept to work in this is what happened to me!!

I recently upped my income by getting a band 6 (so better wages and office hours). I increased my hours a bit too. I do bank once a month on a weekend to get a bit more cash.

I have also looked into doing ear microsuction. Can do a training course in a day, equipment costs about £350 then you’d need insurance/petrol but relatively low overheads. Very tempted to set that service up.

I just do two banks a month thats £500 depending on the day of the wig. The students are much more adventurous one has a cupcake business and one makes hair pieces with hair she imports!

Also if you do bank you still contribute to your NHS pension as does the NHS and you get holiday pay.

@Muchtoomuchtodo I've done a few MVC shifts and really enjoyed them, but ours seem to have recruited their own team now on fixed term contracts, so there's no shifts available, such a shame.
@tiredwardsister I think I'll just broaden my horizons a bit for bank, and step outside of my comfort zone. My pension could do with a boost too after years of part time.
@ThePontiacBandit I looked in to that too! Then someone beat me to it and seems to have cornered the market, I missed a chance there. That's the sort of thing I'm looking for really though, a self employed side line.
@EachandEveryone £500 is definitely not to be sniffed at. I don't know how likely I am to get long days on Sundays though, it's hens teeth isn't it? 😄

in my hospital you can workday bank day or night, long day or short 7 days a week. I’ve just looked there are 14 LDs in all depts outstanding for this Sunday and we’re a small district hospital.

Hav a friend who is a nurse and she teaches manual handling on days off. Could be nonstop as so many student groups/ trainees etc requiring her services. Enjoys it and can plan her own schedule and not as demanding as a 12 hour shift.

Bank in other hospitals (private - £25/£30 an hour)

I want to train in ear syringing/suctioning though and do that privately

Wowzel · 30/10/2022 18:33

I do bank in a&e!

kenadams86 · 30/10/2022 18:55

I did aesthetics for a year and it was so stressful and anxiety inducing that I've stopped.

Can't bare to do bank in the hospital anymore. It's a shit show. I've done a fair bit of over time recently due to flu and covid boosters but that won't last much longer once the season finishes.

Sold quite a bit on Vinted - made £90

Could you look into teaching clinics skills for students nurses at local colleges and universities? That's an option at my local university

I just want to be a full time dog Walker to be honest, sick of nursing

VeganGordie · 08/11/2022 16:04

ive found being an aesthetic nurse has really boosted my income especially being able to choose my own hours! it is definitely something to look into. i did a really good course with dr hennessy academy a few months ago and will probably do another in the new year so i can offer more :)
