New sofa worries

Has anybody ever bought a sofa and it not be able to get into the house? Have my eye on a gorgeous beast but really stressing about this. Not sure it's as simple as comparing the width and depth of the sofa to the door opening. Or is it?

Also how do you get rid of the old one if it's not fit for giving away etc and the company don't offer a take it away service? Why is it sooo difficult?

Dump old one.

Most sofas the arms come off and the feet.

My last house though the sofa had to go thro the window!

Iwritethissittinginthekitchensink · 27/10/2022 22:33

Usually the sofa company tell you what to measure to make sure it’ll fit. Ask them if you’re not sure.

Startuplife · 27/10/2022 22:41

Not a sofa but a bed. Ordered before we moved house due to ridiculous lead times so couldn’t measure but tbh it never even crossed my mind that it wouldn’t fit.
We’d gone for the extra tall headboard and it just would not fit up the stairs. Ended up having to exchange it for a smaller one.

Also put the old one on Facebook marketplace. We’re renovating at the moment so have stuck loads of stuff on there. Bizarrely the old crap you’d think no one wants seems to go the quickest!

forevercooking · 27/10/2022 22:51

We had to take our front window out 😂

SkylightSkylight · 27/10/2022 22:58

Sofa Delivery blokes are magicians in jeans!

They can manoeuvre them in around the doorframe. Just make sure the space is as clear as possible.

some councils will take furniture, with a booked removal, but here anyway, you need to have it kerbside by 7am.

There are companies that do removals at reasonable charges.

msny sofas come as pieces that are assembled inside your house.

SpringIntoChaos · 27/10/2022 23:10

Yes I have...and it was a nightmare 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ We ended up totally dismantling the frame of the sofa from the inside...this took a long time, on our drive, but it was doable, fortunately 😨 Then of course it had to be reassembled once inside! Total mare!

We got our most recent sofa from LOAF and luckily our new home had french doors in the living room so it went in easy. The delivery guys said it was a nice chance as alot of the time they are posting them through windows where the pane has been removed.

As for getting rid of the old sofa our last one was fit for nowt but to get it to the tip the husband literally sawed it up into smaller sections to get into the car

RaininSummer · 27/10/2022 23:22

Oh blimey. Think I am more stressed now. Wouldn't be able to get old one to the dump. Getting onto pavement by 7am will be fun on a work day too. I don't think it's fit for Facebook etc hence me getting a new one. It's kind of collapsed support wise and is very uncomfortable but will cost too much to make it worth fixing. Argg.

I had the opposite problem. Got a new sofa and couldn't get the old one out! I was here when it was delivered and I don't remember it being a problem but I tried 2 different charity shops and neither of them could get it out. I had to take it apart with a hacksaw in the end (which was very therapeutic but a terrible waste and into landfill instead of being resold).

RaininSummer · 27/10/2022 23:28

Maybe I should buy an inflatable sofa. And cut the old one up with a saw.

KnickerlessParsons · 27/10/2022 23:29

Yes! We had to take the window out at the back of the house.

Iwritethissittinginthekitchensink · 27/10/2022 23:36

Google Snug and Swyft sofa companies - they deliver sofas in pieces in a box

Yabado · 27/10/2022 23:49

We chopped ( well DH did ) the old one
took him a few hours and two / 3 trips to the dump as it was a 4 - 3 seater so bloody huge

the new one is a corner / recliner type one and came in three pieces

HarrietSchulenberg · 28/10/2022 00:15

The sofa company will tell you if the new sofa needs lots of room for delivery, and some of the really big ones come in smaller sections which are assembled on arrival. They have to or they'd never sell any! And the delivery men really are wizards when it comes to manoeuvring through tight spaces. I bought a giant sofa from Furniture Village and they advised me of minimum widths etc for delivery.
The old sofa must have come in somehow so will def go out again. I had to take the feet off mine which gave me a few precious cm wiggle room with it.

RaininSummer · 28/10/2022 07:37

I will email the company of the particular one I have my eye on.

This happened to my friend. She has to refuse delivery and rearrange. She had to pay £200 to get a company to come and take the glass out of her window then get the sofa in and put the glass back on!

You can pay council to take the old one away or sometimes you might find the company your getting it from will recycle for a small fee.

RaininSummer · 28/10/2022 10:38

Just had a reply from the company saying all their furniture will fit through a door of 64cm. That sound quite small to me for the sofa I'm looking at. At work now but will measure when home.

OP posts:
snowballer · 28/10/2022 10:46

Door frame width is only one thing to consider. If, for example, the sofa has to come in front door into a narrow hall and then into a room on the right it might still be difficult (previous bitter experience). If the sofa is taller than the door it can't be turned on its end, and if the hall is too narrow it won't be able to be tipped to get through the door.

Angles of movement of sofa are really, really important in this, not just doorframe measurements.

StillNotWarm · 28/10/2022 11:01

64cm is a narrow door.

But pay attention to the comment above - it's not just width of door, but if they need to turn it at the same time.

Our sofa went in, and out, of the old house without a problem. Could it be got into the (sittingroom) of the new house? Not a chance.
Got an upholsterer to come and take the fabric off, cut it in half, move and reassemble. £120. Sofa lived in the dining room til he could come out, but apparently he gets a number of calls "my sofa is in the garden, please help now". Luckily we could squeeze a sofa in the kitchen-diner.

Chemenger · 28/10/2022 11:09

When we moved into our flat there was one turn on the stairs that the removal men couldn’t get the sofa round. They debated standing on top of the van and pushing the sofa up on to our balcony. However they found a window on the landing that it would go through. I have no idea how they got it up to the window - it’s above my head. They thought it was all great fun. The moment that they told me they initially couldn’t get it in was a bit of a desperate one though.

RaininSummer · 28/10/2022 22:18

OMG. Well I will update you all in 6 to 8 weeks. Fingers crossed please.

GoodnightGentleBoris · 28/10/2022 22:21

If you can’t get it in then look up Sofa Assist, the delivery men of our sofa said it wouldn’t fit and left it in the hallway but frank was amazing and talked us through how to do it over the phone. Lovely guy.

Our council will take away sofas for £20

RaininSummer · 28/10/2022 22:41

Interestingly. That's a niche but very useful job role.

I once hired a crane to get my sofa in to my first floor flat 🤣
