Don't know what to do - go off sick or suffer??

I really need help with a dilemma please.

I have a really stressful job. So much so that it's making my physically ill. I don't sleep, I'm having a psoriasis flare up all over my body including in my eyes and ears, I vomit every morning because my stomach is churning so much. I'm having panic attacks every day.

I leave in 2 weeks time for a new job. I have a lot to handover and this is just adding to my stress.

Current job have been really shit with me. Refusing to acknowledge or pay the additional 50 hours per month I've worked since May. Refusing to credit back holiday hours where I've worked on annual leave. Refused requests for an additional team member and instead accused me of not being productive enough. My direct manager has made jokes about my physical disability and suggested I have "over-exaggerated" even though I am a wheelchair user with no use of my legs.

My husband thinks I should see the GP tomorrow and get signed off for the last two weeks BUT I still have so much to hand over before I go. I feel such a sense of responsibility that everything is on order before I go. But it's literally killing me.

WWYD??

I'd do a brief overview handover list for my own conscience for the people taking over the work, as presumably they are not to blame. Then I would 100 per cent get signed off.

OnTheRunWithMannyMontana · 26/10/2022 19:01

I've done a few hours of handover already this week so there's a few things I can tick off the list.

I'm going to call the GP tomorrow morning and explain to them how stressed I am and ask to be signed off.

There's a fair bit on my outstanding list that they would just need to outsource. But then maybe if they had treated me a bit better then they wouldn't need to!

Thanks as always you lovely nest of vipers! I feel like all of your responses have really strengthened me.

GP is calling later this afternoon. So I'm going to spend my morning writing as many instructions as possible!

I hope those are instructions to yourself detailing how you're going to relax over the next two weeks.

Newtrix · 27/10/2022 10:09

Fuck that! Get yourself signed off sick and have a couple of weeks to pull yourself round before starting your new job.

Squizzas · 27/10/2022 10:28

In this situation I’d have no hesitation in letting your employers deal with the handover. They don’t deserve you spending the next two weeks doing this for them.

OnTheRunWithMannyMontana · 27/10/2022 22:58

Done it. Sick note in!

I've agreed to one more training/handover session on Monday but that's me done!

That’s exactly what I would have recommended, one more meeting as a formal handover. Hope the rest helps op!
All the best with the new job

Squizzas · 27/10/2022 23:53

Thats great. I hope your new job goes well.

Newtrix · 01/11/2022 12:03

Well done OP! Hope yesterday went well.

Notanotherwindow · 01/11/2022 13:15

I'm team DH. Fuck them, they treated you like shit, who cares if you leave them up the creek?!

I'd probably do it out of spite even if I wasn't stressed! Natural consequences isn't it? Or if you're so inclined just consider it taking back what they owe you. Which is probably a sight more than 2 weeks sick pay.

OnTheRunWithMannyMontana · 01/11/2022 14:13

Thanks :) it was ok - they had already shut down my access even though my leave date isn't for 2 weeks so I had fun convincing IT to switch me back on! Then got so stressed out with the negative questioning that I had to pause the meeting halfway through to go and throw up.

Thank god I'm out. Laptop shut down permanently now and emails deleted from my phone. I've been taken out of the WhatsApp group already too.

Well done, use the time to rest and reset - here’s to hopefully a more positive working environment going forward.

Axlcat · 01/11/2022 14:24

Congratulations and now onwards and upwards. Don’t give them a second thought. Good luck with the new role!

I would seek legal advice and sue them as well. Do it, they are dangerous company and need to be called out.

rosyroses · 01/11/2022 14:28

Well done. I hope you'll be so much happier in you new job and they appreciate what you are worth. How you were treated is disgusting

OnTheRunWithMannyMontana · 01/11/2022 14:56

Thanks so much.

I've spoken to ACAD and they are sending me some templates to raise a grievance for disability discrimination. So that will keep me busy tomorrow!

I'm really not fussed about a payout or anything like that. I just want them to recognise that they treated me badly and they need to do better in future.

OP posts:
OnTheRunWithMannyMontana · 01/11/2022 14:57

ACAS sorry

It's your health- you've obviously worked your arse off for them you owe them nothing...get signed off and get yourself well for your next job. No one is indispensable- if you were run over by a bus tonight they'd cope..let them.

Seasider2017 · 01/11/2022 15:45

Just don’t go back , leave them in the shit
they obviously haven’t in the passed cared about you and now there true colours are coming out

you owe them NO loyalty whatsoever!

I would not beat myself up about hand over one bit, they sound horrible

OnTheRunWithMannyMontana · 01/11/2022 19:07

Haven't been sick today, haven't had any palpitations or panic attacks and when I put all my steroid creams on the big psoriasis patches on my legs already look less inflamed.

Absolute madness what physical toll stress can take on you!

OP posts:
23Elfie · 01/11/2022 21:36

Definitely get signed off, they have treated you awfully.
Because I'm a cow I'd make a right mess of whatever is to be handed over and leave there with a massive smile on my face. Karma is a bitch Smile

23Elfie · 01/11/2022 21:38

Ooops sorry my rubbish phone just seen you've got a sick note - good for you!

Squizzas · 01/11/2022 21:39

Long term stress wreaks havoc physically and mentally and I think it’s easy to underestimate particularly the physical side of it. Really glad you are feeling better already . And very glad you’ve been in touch with ACAS. No employer has the right to treat staff like shit and leave them physically and mentally wrecked.

Notanotherwindow · 02/11/2022 17:30

You should bother about a pay out! These companies magically manage to give a fuck when it hits them in the pocket. Money is the only language they speak.
