How to get the smell of sweat out of clothes

Any tips on how to get the smell of sweat out of gym clothes, especially tops. Even after washing two or three times they smell pretty bad. I don’t want to have to throw them out because they’re still in really good condition, and I can’t keep buying new gym tops every few weeks anyway. I don’t use fabric conditioner and I try to wash as quickly as possible after taking them off but not sure what else to do.

Have you tried dettol laundry cleaner (or similar)? Or vinegar?

Drbrowns · 25/10/2022 13:47

I have tried dettol detergent but hasn’t made a noticeable difference. Never thought to try vinegar.

You can buy white vinegar spray in the cleaning aisle of home bargains or b&m and it works perfectly. I had this issues for ages and the vinegar solved it I just spray in the armpits or wherever (saturate it) and leave for an hour before washing.

Ive heard Halo is very good (available from Sainsbury's).

Chloefairydust · 25/10/2022 13:50

white vinegar

BaronessBomburst · 25/10/2022 13:50

Yes, use vinegar. I soak DH's running gear from time to time and it always gets the smell out.

Anonymous177 · 25/10/2022 13:52

Soak them for a few hours or overnight with vinegar or whatever else you try. If the smell is really embedded then just washing probably won’t work.

Moominfanjo · 25/10/2022 13:53

Spot clean sweaty areas with ordinary palmolive soap and bung in machine on 60 degrees with your normal detergent, sorted.

I spray the underarms bit with antibac spray and leave it 5 minutes before washing. Wash at 40 and use dettol laundry cleanser in the final rinse.

Drbrowns · 25/10/2022 13:55

Ok I have one top soaking in vinegar and water, will leave over night and see how it goes tomorrow. Thanks for the tips.

Another vote for Halo!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 25/10/2022 13:56

Halo or Nikwax baselayer wash

kilos · 25/10/2022 13:57

I've had this problem too and also recommend halo. I've also soaked in bicarbonate of soda which worked.

passport123 · 25/10/2022 13:58

Halo detergent, you can get it on amazon

TheTeddyBears · 25/10/2022 14:02

Vinegar and bicarbonate soda I think it is. Absolutely stinks but does work although I found not for long 🙈

PollyEsther · 25/10/2022 14:02

What temperature are you washing at? You're unlikely to kill the bacteria causing the smell below 60 degrees.

A580Hojas · 25/10/2022 14:08

Turn top inside out. Dampen armpit with cold water. Rub area with a bar of Dettol anti bacterial soap or anti bac washing up liquid. Wash as normal on a 40 degree wash using bio powder.

validnumber · 25/10/2022 14:11

I use halo but also the Detol.
Turn top inside out and detol each armpit!

mummyof2boys30 · 25/10/2022 14:23

Bicarbonate soda and white vingear. Steep and then machine wash. I read this once on nike www

KatherineJaneway · 25/10/2022 14:23

Dettol laundry cleanser. Pour onto the area that smells and leave for 15 minutes and wash at a reasonably high temp. Sorted.

lannistunut · 25/10/2022 14:25

Another vote for vinegar. Often the armpits are a problem due to build up of deodorant, vinegar helps remove that.

Purpleavocado · 25/10/2022 14:25

What detergent do you use? When I used non-bio, I had problems like this. Problem solved with a hot wash and biological detergent, then 30 degrees with the bio detergent was fine.

ohidoliketobe · 25/10/2022 14:26

Halo vote here. Works wonders on DHs stinky sweaty cycling and running gear and DSs footie kit

Luxurysleuth007 · 25/10/2022 14:27

Dettol laundry cleanser is great- I use it for every wash regardless, the biggest bottle when on offer for £5.50-£6 is best value.

Mrsjayy · 25/10/2022 14:32

Are you washing them low and quick? You need to do a 40 imo to get any smells and to kill bacteria white vinegar in the drum and also do a pre wash
