Wycombe Abby is soooo dry.

So dry. It's not somewhere I would send my girls too

bookish83 · 25/10/2022 21:13

I thought the Beckhams lived in LA! Did they move back?

Dogsgottabone · 25/10/2022 21:15

Millfield is a boarding school. The children board and go home for exeat and the school holidays. So the parents can live anywhere in the world.

@ManefesationofConciousness that sounds more like Bedales. Millfield def not like that.

You have to be very bright to go to Wycombe Abbey. Money alone will not get you a place.

Not sure I'd say "very". I know of a North London indie where the head told an entire year group's parents not to try for any of the local state selectives as none of the girls had a hope that year. Several of them are now at Wycombe Abbey.

TheHouseonHauntedHill · 25/10/2022 21:20

I've heard Wycombe and Kendrick are science/maths school and that's the big push/focus

The younger Rees Moggs go to Hill House in Chelsea I believe. I'd put that high in the rankings of the country's poshest school.

I disagree. It’s a very weird school and it’s not academically selective.

Trainfromredhill · 25/10/2022 21:32

No. I’ve never heard of it. I’d say the most exclusive girls schools either by money or brains are Wycombe Abbey, Cheltenham ladies, Rodean, Benenden, St Paul’s girls, st Mary’s calne.

I’m not disagreeing with your list, but they are all girls secondary schools. Glendower is a prep, ie only goes up to age 11.

KatyMaisie · 26/01/2023 12:39

Millfield

Toadybum · 26/01/2023 12:44

St Mary's Ascot not Calne surely

Toadybum · 26/01/2023 12:44

Millfield is neither a girls school, nor particularly posh - but it is quite fun and has amazing facilities, especially for sports

But the general reputation is that it js a school for kids who are sporty, not academic and/or rich - usually in that order.

BlackberrySky · 26/01/2023 14:08

Glendower is just like a whole host of other London prep schools. They all like to pretend they are unique but in reality they are all very similar.

Well that's OK isn't it? It sounds perfect for my kids although we aren't rich

There was a thread a few years ago about a very old fashioned girls school where the pupils had to climb through the classroom windows. I want to go to that school!

Milfield was wild in the 80’s Lily Allen and lots of very famous rebellious kids who had famous parents went there. It had terrible reputation for behaviour appalling academic results too. It got new headteacher and restyled itself as the sports school to attend

msdiscerning · 25/09/2023 03:41

The most academically successful school consistently with the best gcse and A level results combined is Brighton College, and it is VERY difficult to get into with rigorous admissions tests.
Places like Marlborough and Eaton are VERY posh and expensive but they are not for exclusively academic kids they are very mixed as shown by really not very academic people like William and Kate attending each school. My ex father in law went to Marlborough along with many successful celebrities and they all went into Cambridge university. Its selection criteria is wealth.

msdiscerning · 25/09/2023 03:47

Rodean is the most famous of the girls schools. We live close and have a couple of friends with kids there my daughter is absolutely outstanding at sport so was eligible for a scholarship they give really good ones, but its a very international school full of the daughters of Chinese Arab and Russian Multi Millionare and Billionaires. The drop down menu to choose your prefix included every world title from Princess and Duchess down through the aristocratic ranks. That completely put me off despite the fact I absolutely love the building, the farm, stables and private pathways and tunnel that comes onto the beach, its a stunning setting but my daughter chose a regular girls school that was much more down to earth. So yes Rodean is very very posh but they also give way more generous scholarships and bursaries than the other local girls independence schools because they have the resources to do so. The less “posh” and affluent the school is the harder it is for less wealthy families to access support to attend because they simplify don’t have the funds.

@Dinaprettyballerina Glendower, Garden House and the rest of these linked in Tatler London Prep review are all much the same.

they are lovely and I think rather dreamy places.
and seeing the children all dressed up in places like battersea park or the london postal museum is really sweet. Newton Prep and the Thomas's are bigger and the kids often look a bit wilder with their shirts untucked and ties askew.

when people have a lot of money, school selection is not always about high grades and uni acceptance. it can be a bit more of a gentle introduction to world that most likely will places strange demands on them due to their parentage. so a secure friendly place that has some element of prescreening for safety sake and liberal leeway with off season travel requirements.
