Would you be happy with a 3.5% pay rise?

If last year, you got 1%?

OP posts:
NoodleNuts · 25/10/2022 10:13

Well it's 0.5% more than I got! I realise that it's not great but the way I see it, it's better than nothing and slightly more than I got last year!

Fivehares · 25/10/2022 10:16

Yep considering we haven’t had one in a few years and before that not for a long time

TheFlis12345 · 25/10/2022 10:16

Yup, not had once since 2019 so anything would be an improvement!!

Sirzy · 25/10/2022 10:18

well given inflation rates it’s a real term pay cut.

Lineeyes222 · 25/10/2022 10:19

No. It's a pay cut, not a pay rise when inflation is at 10%. Employees need to demand demand fair compensation for the work they do rather than staying silent and accepting to have less money year on year.

Everydaywheniwakeup · 25/10/2022 10:19

Not especially. It wouldn't make enough difference for me to feel I'd had a pay rise but would be enough that I wouldn't get one for a long time due to the 'generosity' of the 3.5%.

HideTheCroissants · 25/10/2022 10:21

I’d be thrilled then realise that my employer would have to make more cuts (reducing hours or redundancy) to afford that. DH and I are both public sector and won’t be getting anywhere near that.

ComtesseDeSpair · 25/10/2022 10:30

It depends. What sector and industry do you work in, is it a profit-making company, has it been a good year for the company? If you know you work in a sector which is going to struggle over the next few months as people tighten their belts and cut back on luxuries e.g.hospitality or retail then it’s better on balance than staff demanding pay increases which raise the wage bill to the extent that savings have to be made through redundancies.

I work in an industry which will be largely unaffected by consumer caution (and indeed will probably flourish), we’ve had a record breaking year, and hit our full year financial targets by the middle of Q3. I’m anticipating and expecting a somewhat larger pay rise.

NextPrimeMinister · 25/10/2022 10:49

Private sector and got 1.5%. I'd be very happy with 3.5%.

Gronkle · 25/10/2022 10:49

Yes. I know inflation is high but if everyone got an inflation matching pay rise inflation would soar even higher as companies would have to raise prices and make staff cuts. We need to all make adjustments to our lives to see this through.

QuietNeighbour · 25/10/2022 10:51

Relatively, yes as it would more more of a rise than I’ve seen in … forever (promotions notwithstanding).

Twilightstarbright · 25/10/2022 10:51

Yes as I’m getting 0%.

Subnauctic · 25/10/2022 10:53

No because it's not enough.

But yes because my actual pay rise this year was a measly 2%.

Hopeful201 · 25/10/2022 11:09

Yep, our company is about to make some redundancies and payrises will be non existent.

Floydthebarber · 25/10/2022 11:09

Yes, but I am in the Civil Service so will take what I can get to be honest.

AriettyHomily · 25/10/2022 11:11

I wouldn't be happy no but I'd take it, it's 2% more than I got.

TheChosenTwo · 25/10/2022 11:12

No. It’s what we’ve been offered and it’s been universally rejected.
I work for a union, we are campaigning hard for better, fairer pay rises for others. We feel it’s a kick in the teeth to have been offered 3.5% in the current climate. It’s absolutely not enough.

KILM · 25/10/2022 11:25

No, because its not enough and the business continues to spend money on pure bollocks like the travel budget for the billions of seniors travelling constantly for silly reasons when we also maintain very expensive video conferencing kit, expensive ad campaigns full of crazy CGI with big name stars, when much cheaper ones could be produced, big shiny offices noone wants or needs to attend, wacking great pay packets for seniors who have missed their targets several years in a row, and to top it all off, there never being any accountability or consequences for any of the 6 thousand projects that cost millions and always come in dramatically over budget largely with zero in depth scrutiny of the spending.
Massive company, massive industry - the money IS there and to be told it isnt is an insult.

2pinkginsplease · 25/10/2022 11:27

It’s better than some are receiving, dh used to earn way more than me and gradually with me changing jobs to different companies I’m actually on more an hour than he is. His boss hates giving pay rises and only does it if someone good threatens to leave. Can’t remember the last time he had a wage rise!

TheTeddyBears · 25/10/2022 11:30

Yes because I got nothing yet again! Last yr think it was 0.5%. Prior years have been the same very little or nothing. Most I've ever had in 7yrs in 1%. We were all shocked it this year though but yet nothing happens.

RovenderKitt · 25/10/2022 11:38

We need more context, OP. I got 3.5% (private sector) in May and was disappointed but thought it could have been worse. If my pay review was now, given the extra rises in inflation since then, I would be even more so. It has made me start thinking about looking for another job next year.

RoseMartha · 25/10/2022 11:38

I dont have a pay rise every year. I did get one last year as I was abt to drop below min wage. And next year I imagine I will too as it will drop below the min wage again. So I would be more than happy to have 3.5%

TheHouseonHauntedHill · 25/10/2022 11:44

@TheChosenTwo

Out of interest my sil was offered a fairly ok pay rise but it went up to people on 60 thousand,is that fair?
It will be prorated as well

Vanillaradio · 25/10/2022 12:01

No. But I'm being offered 2.5 and dh 1.5 % when we got 0% last year so would be doing better than we are now.

TheChosenTwo · 25/10/2022 12:03

What do you think @TheHouseonHauntedHill ?
I have seen wage increases done on a sliding scale based on earnings and also blanket increases. I don’t understand what you mean by is it fair, has it been offered as x% for everyone? Is it that you think people on 60K don’t deserve a pay increase too? Or that you think people earning above this should get the pay increase aswell? Or that you think it should have been offered on a sliding scale?!
sorry! Come back to me with more information 😂
