Cake box. Egg free cake

Ordered a cake for DDs birthday and it's utterly rank.

Thing is we usually do caterpillar cakes or home baked due to finances but she's had a tough year and wanted a 'fancy' one so I obliged.

It cost me £34 for an 8" square picture cake. (the picture was peeling upwards too and was very 'sweaty' looking)

Everyone (3 adults and 5 kids) has left cake on their plate. When does that ever happen?!

Shall I just chalk it up to experience and never order again or would you try and get a refund. It tastes so weird, like artificial with a really weird aftertaste, almost soapy?!

Throughly fed up :(

Oh I love those cakes! I am possibly not very sophisticated though.

I would try and get a refund. Take pictures.

My husband bought some cupcakes from them a while ago - awful. They were a really strange texture and left a horrid taste behind. And the cases they were in had best before dates on of over 3.5 weeks away! I can't imagine any cake that lasts around a month could be nice!

Am definitely not sophisticated, like I said we usually have a £6 caterpillar cake!

The sponge was lovely and light but the white icing was really weird! Not buttercream or normal cream. I don't know what it was. It's left a film on my teeth.

DS said 'this tastes weird' so it's not just me.

Yeah, the texture is so odd.

Most of it's gone in the bin :(

Cake Box is a company, is it?

WhatTheHellIsAQuasar · 24/10/2022 19:48

That’s just how they are - lovely light sponge, slightly weird cream. Doesn’t sound like you got a duff one

InsertPunHere · 24/10/2022 19:49

It's horrible skanky cake. It's aimed at people (like Hindus) who can have dairy but can't have egg. Unless you have the same dietary requirement I'd never ever buy from there.

In fairness it's a franchise buisness, so how good your local franchisee is makes a difference.

The cakes are disgusting and whatever they put in to replace the egg gives me an upset stomach. They look very pretty though so I've been fooled more than once at parties, taken a slice and then not been able to spit it out.

CakeBox · 24/10/2022 20:04

I didn't even realise they were egg free till I got in there.

It's just the most local shop and they looked so pretty in the window.

We tried them once as DC is allergic to eggs, the actual cake was ok but the icing was so bitter. Now I use a lovely local vegan bakery.

FabFitFifties · 28/12/2022 20:47

I've tried once and was very disappointed- very light, so not sickly, but lacking in any substance or flavour. Expected better at £4 a slice.

DreamingOfAGreenChristmas · 28/12/2022 20:56

There is one by the bus stop I use. I look in the window and think they look revolting.

Bad luck OP, stick to the ever delicious original caterpillar!
