Lundy island question

Niche question but I can't find the answer on Google. How bad does the sea state need to be before they replace the ferry with the helicopter?

I actually spoke to someone this morning who said they were off to Lundy next week on the first helicopter of the season. Not sure I can help any further!

Daisypod · 24/10/2022 18:36

I have a friend who goes and from what she's said helicopter runs from autumn to spring no matter what.

Jaffapaffa · 24/10/2022 18:36

I don't know, but we did have to be helicoptered off once. It was quite turbulent in the helicopter.

BrambleyHedge · 24/10/2022 18:41

We are off tomorrow and back last ferry of the season . .. and the shipping forecast looks a bit rough which is why I asked 😐

Even when it’s pretty flat it feels rough on the boat (something to do with it having a flat bottom) - deffo take some anti-emetics if you get sick. Not sure the helicopter looks much more appealing in bad weather!

In the off season it's helicopter only

In season it's the Oldandbuggered only

We've been "stranded" in the season twice due to bad weather and both times it was too poor for the helicopter to fly so we had to stay. Because the new visitors couldn't get there we simply stayed in our accommodation for an extra night.

On the first occasion we had another family sleep on our floor that extra night as most tents had blown away! It was some storm! Amazing to experience when on a "lump of granite in the atlantic" as my grandad used to call it.

Love Lundy? Where are you staying?

It can depend on quite a few variables really. We've been to Lundy lots of times including a few rough crossings. On one occasion the sea was rough and they were not convinced they would be able to land so they only took the 'stayers' (didn't bring the day trippers) and we sat on the other side of the island for hours to wait for the tide to change before we tried to land. The most important thing is the wind direction - if the wind is easterly it makes it much harder for the boat to land. Normally the jetty on the island is sheltered by the island and the sea state doesn't make as much of a difference to the landing - it might just be a lumpy crossing! We've also had a 7am surprise boat trip back to the mainland on New Year's Eve because it was too foggy for the helicopter - they really try their best whenever they can!

Thanks for the info. Looks like the boat is on for tomorrow. I have been in very rough seas in the South Atlantic when I was young but kids are untested so that will be fun....

We are staying in the Light house (upper).

Fab! Love the lighthouse. We were booked in there once but missed it as my son had to have an operation.

Wonder if the deckchairs are still at the top of the lighthouse to sit and watch in peace?

Have a fabulous time.

One day I hope to stay at Tibbets (a bucket list stay for me) and Hanmers (my late Mum's non achieved bucket list stay).

I’m off to Lundy next year (staying in the Blue Sunday School) and really looking forward to it. Nice to be prepared for a rough boat trip - I’ll get the seasick tablets ready.

Hope you have a great time.
