Help! Washed a down jacket...

Having a clear out and washed a down North Face ski jacket in the machine (it does say machine washable on delicate) to get it ready to sell.

The filling is now all clumped together in patches, is there anything I can do to rescue it? It says no tumble dryer.

Yes. Let it air dry on a hanger and then and only when it is dry - tumble it. It will come to no harm. I have a tommy hilfiger down type coat and I do this. Don't tumble it for too long or it may shrink a bit

The down won't be dry yet. I don't have a tumble dryer, so I have to tease the clumps apart through the material for each section several times during the drying process and eventually it will be dry and return to normal.

Yes it can be saved. Pop it on the line outside on a blowy day and after give it a shake. If it’s still clumped inside try laying it over a stair bannister to air.

If you do tumble dry then do it on cold and stick a couple of dryer balls or tennis balls in too, helps it fluff up. I’d risk the dryer personally.

Whataretheodds · 24/10/2022 17:20

Tumble dry on cool with a bald tennis ball (or dryer egg)

LetUsPonce · 24/10/2022 17:20

Get it as dry as you can and then put it in the tumble dryer on a very low heat with a (clean) tennis ball. The bumping around of the ball will fluff the feathers back up for you.

sleepwhenidie · 24/10/2022 17:21

It will be fine, the down just takes ages to dry out. Once it does you can shake out the clumps and it redistributes itself. No need for dryer unless in a rush

MonsteraDeliciosa · 24/10/2022 17:37

Down is fine to wash. If you can’t tumble it, tease the clumps out. They’ll fall apart anyway when fully dry.

garlictwist · 24/10/2022 17:38

It's fine to wash in the machine but you need to tumble dry it after (perhaps with a tennis ball) to refluff it. Letting it dry naturally will ruin it.

greenacrylicpaint · 24/10/2022 17:39

it will be fine.

give it a good shake to fluff the feathers up again during drying.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 24/10/2022 17:39

I washed a Northface puffa in the machine recently and panicked when it came out looking completely deflated, with the down in clumps at the bottom.

I dried it flat and gave it a good shake every few hours, massaging the clumps to separate them.
Bu the time it was completely dry, it was as puffy as before I washed it.

Chloefairydust · 24/10/2022 17:40

Try using a hair dryer on it to dry the feathers?

Shiningstarr · 24/10/2022 17:53

My son washed his north face jacket with down feathers inside and it was all clumped together like yours.

You're meant to put it in the tumble drier with a tennis ball or tumble dryer spiky ball, this gets all the down unclumped and in the right places.

I just change the tumble dryer setting to cool.

emmama2 · 24/10/2022 18:24

I use to work in an out adopts type store. Please dry it flat. It's in danger of the weight of the down breaking the fine mesh that holds the down in the baffles and it all falling to the bottom (or the opposite end of you shaking it) . Dry flat and leave for a day to dry. Once completely dry gently shake it to unclump the down and fluff it up again.
