Air fried roasties, where am I going wrong?

Send help please.
I have tried making roast potatoes in the air fryer and every time they fail to come out crispy 😭
So far I have tried par boiling new potatoes, Maris Piper potatoes and various other varieties.
I've tossed them in oil, sprinkled salt and pepper on.
Tried various temperatures and times and each time I've failed.
Please can someone give me your way of making lovely roast potatoes in the air fryer that come out fluffy on the inside and crispy on the outside.
They're perfect in the oven, but hopeless in the fryer.
Thank you all.

I don't parboil mine and make sure they are really dry. I just use white potatoes

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 24/10/2022 14:54

Just like in an ordinary oven.
I parboil them, then bash them up a bit with a spoon a bit.

Hersetta427 · 24/10/2022 14:54

I let mine steam dry thoroughly before air frying.

My 9 year old is always making them! He says just a teaspoon of oil then 25 minutes at 205.
He does chop them smaller than in the oven though.

CraneBoysMysteries · 24/10/2022 14:57

Not an air fryer user here! But I always understood to get good crispy roasties you needed to heat the oil in the tray very hot first! So the oil crisps the outside as soon as the potatoes hit it

If you put oil on cold then surely it wakes up on the potatoes and soaks in, therefore making it tricky to get crisp?

I chop in quarters, wash and dry, in a sandwich bag with lard, salt and garlic powder, squish in the lard and 20 mins 170+ 10 mins 205.
Delicious and no parboiling.

Mine has a roast option, so I use that. Works well.

Mentalpiece · 24/10/2022 15:03

I will try that, do you melt the lard a little first?
Unfortunately my fryer doesn't have a roast option, it's just a basic one.
Thanks so far.

Sorry, I've just seen that you squish the lard, ignore me.
I will give it a go though.

I just hold the lard to soften it. When I'm being posh I buy a pot of dripping and pour that in after melting it in boiling water. Oil is fine for chips and wedges but roasties always taste better in lard imo!

The functions on the air fryer are normally just the pre-set temperature/time that each different setting has, it doesn't actually change the way it cooks at all so it doesnt matter if you don't have loads a roast function.
Apart from dehydrate which is a little different due to using lower temps

Mentalpiece · 24/10/2022 15:13

Thanks everyone.
I will give your method a go.

Chop and parboil potatoes,
Preheat air fryer
drain potatoes in colander.
Put oil in pan that you've boiled potatoes in , rest colander on top to allow potatoes to dry, and heat oil.
Toss potatoes in hot oil, then add to airfyer ( 200C for about 20 mins)

I made them for the fist time yesterday and they were delicious!

GloriousGoosebumps · 24/10/2022 15:36

We follow a receipe learnt from a tv program. Don't parboil the potatoes. Instead microwave them for 14 minutes - 7 minutes than stir followed by another 7 minutes. Spray them using an oil spray and airfry for 20 minutes. They come out crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside.

RosalindsAFuckingNightmare · 24/10/2022 15:42

I think it's key that they are dry.

Mentalpiece · 24/10/2022 16:08

I will try all the methods mentioned and see which, if any work for me.
Thanks all, you've all been very helpful.

I use a normal oven my multi cooker isn't big enough but you have to heat the oil and tray before you add the parboiled potatoes that you have roughed up by tossing in the colander for the best results. If you over load the tray they don't crisp up as nicely remember
