Teachers - notice period is this week to leave at Christmas

Workyticket · 24/10/2022 12:02

I'm on a Facebook group for teachers looking to get out

Notice has to be in by the end of this week I believe (I'm FE so different) and there are so many teachers putting theirs in.

I know that @Noblegiraffe is usually the one to start these threads and some people think she exaggerates

We're in the shit people - already in crisis and way more will be gone at Christmas

Email your MP, back teachers striking when they (inevitably) go out and be prepared to start forking out for stationery etc to send your kids into school with.

I'm not going to leave at Christmas but I don't know how much longer I'll stay. It's a shit show. Our school (small village) is really struggling financially.

Curta · 24/10/2022 12:09

The 31st October deadline also means that HTs can only recruit those not already in contract, to begin in January 2023, so lots of these positions just won't be filled.

Workyticket · 24/10/2022 12:10

Lots of schools can only afford ECTs to replace experienced ones too

Yes I worry about this. Problem I have is I'm part time on UPS which isn't desirable. I'm also a bit 'long in the tooth' nowadays since having my daughter and I refuse to do any more than I need to. My goodwill is thin on the ground! Another reason to get the more enthusiastic fresh ECTs in!

Workyticket · 24/10/2022 18:45

The poor buggers aren't enthusiastic gor long though - lots jump ship before the end of their first year

Handed my notice in last week...

Kalasbyxor · 24/10/2022 19:08

We're losing a teacher next week and an ECT at Christmas; can't replace our first resignee for love nor money, and worrying about replacing our ECT a great deal.
Our TAs and our one HLTA are on their knees, several working two jobs.

doctorboo · 24/10/2022 19:19

One of my colleagues is handing their notice in and I’m gutted as they’re a) very knowledgeable b) really lovely.
I haven’t got a clue who I’ll be working with after Christmas and it’s making me feel sick. We’ve had a rough couple of years staffing wise and I was hoping for at least one year with no resignations.

Afonavon · 24/10/2022 19:25

Out SEN TAs are struggling especially as the job is devoid of the rewards, financially and from supporting very challenging children. Goodwill has gone out of the window as they have been stretched to the limits, along with being physically assaulted multiple times a day.

It is a shit show and that is a fucking disgrace.

Postapocalypticcowgirl · 24/10/2022 20:12

A friend who is a physics teacher is leaving at Christmas. He'd already moved to the private sector, but he is too burnt out to make it work there, either. He's taking a significant pay cut to leave, although ultimately may earn a lot more in his new career.

Several schools in the county are down to 1 or 0 physics specialists.

There's currently nearly 40 schools in the county who are looking for teachers- including 3 which are looking for head teachers. Realistically, if they haven't recruited now, that post will be vacant until Easter at the earliest.

I've never seen this many schools looking for staff at this point in the autumn term before. There's lots of schools looking for primary staff and secondary subjects that aren't usually considered shortage too.

JanglyBeads · 24/10/2022 20:16

Am not sure @noblegiraffe is encouraging teachers to resign though, OP!
She'd rather teachers stayed but retained their mental health, I think.

GoodVibesHere · 24/10/2022 20:22

I don't understand this post, why are you informing us of the notice period for teachers? Genuine question as I'm obviously missing the point but I'm curious about what this means? I'm not a teacher, my notice period is 4 weeks.

As a class TA we don't even have the support of SEN TAs when we need them, we are trying to do both jobs and it is impossible. I'm making a decision two weeks before Christmas holidays start as I only have to give a month's notice. I love my job but it's becoming unsustainable. No idea what else I would do though...

Teachers only have three times a year that they can leave...effectively once a term. If you miss the deadline you have to wait until the next term to leave

Most teacher contracts only allow you to leave at the end of each half term so there are 6 dates a year that you have to give your notice in by to be able to leave at the next half term. So for example if I hand my notice in now, I can leave at Christmas but if I hand it in in 2 weeks time, I will have to wait until Feb half term.

SchoolOfGoodAndEvil · 24/10/2022 20:36

I am on SLT at a secondary school.
Handing in my notice on Monday.
I’ve absolutely had enough.

Latermumfairy · 24/10/2022 20:40

It’s a post to make everyone panic that ALL teachers are handing their notice in and therefore everyone should support strikes.

if you’re on a FB group about teachers wanting to leave then it’s probably best to leave this stuff here. I personally know 3 newly qualified (30’s) teachers who are loving the role.

ExhaustedPigeon · 24/10/2022 20:42

Maybe I'm wrong and it's only termly. I've been in post for 17 years so obviously not up to date with resigning! We have a y6 post unfilled (the teacher who was supposed to be joining us pulled out the week before the summer holidays and we haven't been able to recruit despite 3 adverts) we have another teacher leaving at Christmas and 2 going on mat leave shortly afterwards. SLT are filling the gaps currently but can't cover everything. We have no TAs apart from 1-1 as they were all made redundant. It's a shit show and I dont know how we are going to have an adult in front of every class by February.

RoastedTurnip · 24/10/2022 20:50

I love(d) teaching. I'm about 15 years in and have done middle leadership and thought about SLT. I'm now forcing myself to stay in a bit longer, in the hope things improve as I don't want to leave, but I'm struggling

Because the go to reply on eduction threads is "if its that bad, then why don't you leave?"

Well...they are! En mass!

Same as me and I'm leaving with nothing to go to.

Avocadont77 · 24/10/2022 21:02

I shall be handing in my notice on Monday!

I’ve got another teaching job lined up, but they’re already talking about not replacing me and I’m only M6.

XjustagirlX · 24/10/2022 21:10

This may be a silly question but I am genuinely interested.

if there are so few teachers, then it’s an employees market.

Could the teachers just do the parts of the job that they feel are important? I wouldn’t expect them to get sacked as there are no replacements.

XjustagirlX · 24/10/2022 21:11

Posted too soon.

so all the frustrating admin and nonsense parts of the job could just be ignored.

Rainydaize · 24/10/2022 21:20

I'm SLT in a secondary school. I've been teaching for about 12 years. Last night I had what can only be described as a breakdown. I'm utterly utterly exhausted. I've never known it this bad. Ever. What makes it worse is I love my job. I ignore me throughout the term because that's what the job needs. I then end up like this. Hiding under a blanket and cannot stop crying.
