Shark spotting?

My DH has always wanted to see great white sharks. We are in the UK and I was thinking of booking a holiday to Australia next year. Ideally it would be somewhere coastal where he can book a couple of game fishing trips and maybe able to spot sharks? Either hotel or self catering basis would be ideal. We are both in our sixties so wouldn’t want to travel all over. We’d be content to stay in the local town or whatever. Are some areas more favourable than others for shark spotting?

South Africa would be a better bet for a guaranteed great white experience.

I’m a bit nervous about going to South Africa from a safety point of view? I’ve read it can be unpredictable?

Many years ago I was scuba diving off Queensland. The itinerary included places like shark point, shark observatory, shark this, shark that. Did I see a single shark? No.

That's not very helpful. I am intrigued about how you do Great White spotting.

I didn’t see any sharks in Queensland either. 🤷‍♀️

I was thinking from the deck of a boat? Although he’s daft enough to go and do a cage dive😆. I won’t be doing that!

How about Baja California, San Diego or cape Cod?

Isn’t Amity Island the best place to see a great white?

I hope it's a big boat.

What element of South Africa travel are you worried about? That the shark experience would be unpredictable or the destination itself? If its the destination, I could possibly reassure you - the stats you see on high crime rates are certainly true, however crime is more concentrated in particular areas and targeted towards locals rather than tourists. It's a gorgeous, gorgeous place, and I've been travelling there regularly, often alone for a long time. I've once seen a great white (very fleetingly) from my seat at a beach restaurant - I think that's very unusual though) I've also seen false killer whales (not normal either!) and dolphins come into the harbour and humpback whales from the bar terrace. It's just magic there. (I adore Australia too, just wanted to give a view on South Africa)

It's important to carefully research the companies operating cage diving experiences as I believe the ethics can be questionable with some companies over baiting the water.
