Do you write?

Since childhood I loved reading and still do. I always dreamed of writing as an adult and wrote load of silly fiction things in childhood.

However I reached a point in adolescence where I just decided I wasn't cut out for writing and still have this weird reverence for authors because I can't get my head around how people actually put together a novel.

If you write, even just for fun, could you recommend some books or resources about writing?

Thanks so much Halo

Hi,
I know your post was a while ago but I thought I'd answer anyway. I write fiction. I'd written a few short stories (6/7000 words) that were OK but I felt they lacked something. Then I discovered a thing called The Hero's Journey structure and it changed everything. Essentially it's a scaffold to hang your story on.

So now I come up with a vague idea of a story I want to tell, I decide how I want it to end and I start fitting it into the structure. It forces me to make sane and credible decisions for my characters as the story goes from one stage to the next (there are twelve stages). Sometimes to complete a stage I have to invent a new sharacter and a way for my heroine to meet them. It really helps. Now my stories are a lot longer and they make more sense.

There are loads of good articles on the subject but the one that really turned me onto it was this:

it uses The Matrix to give examples as it goes along.

A word of warning though - once you start using the structure you will see it EVERYWHERE ! Every film you watch, every decent TV series, even the Greek Myths - they all use it.

Hope this helps

The Hero's Journey, or monomyth, is a common story structure first documented by Joseph Campbell that many writers use today to write engaging fiction stories.
