I’ve actually ordered some halloween themed cookies from my favourite baking supplier, so that’s more than I usually do! DS wants to be a pirate this year so I will sort that costume for him, but we aren’t trick or treating and I will be turning the lights out and hiding on Monday evening.

I’m mostly indifferent about Halloween - good excuse for a bit of fun but I don’t like the whole of October is spooky season thing, I find that a bit tedious.

OrangePumpkinLobelia · 23/10/2022 16:26

We are this time buying loads of sweeets and carving pumpkins and waiting for people to come to our door. My SEN DS1 has in previous years been petrified of Halloween, but for some reason this year is utterly desperate for people to come to our door so I shall make the most of it!!

@Soubriquet you expect the schools to close for Halloween? That complete bullshit non-event?

You know what? that complete bullshit non event makes some people happy. I am of the view that life sucks a very great deal quite alot of the time, so why not take your enjoyment when you can?

See also Christmas and birthdays.

PinkHeadphones · 23/10/2022 16:29

I like Halloween but can’t understand why it has started already when there’s more than a week to go! I’ve never seen that before. Two houses on our street have decs up, there were loads of kids in costumes in town yesterday…I suppose if nothing else it stops people putting up Christmas decorations..

2pinkginsplease · 23/10/2022 16:31

I work in early years so will be doing some crafts and games for the children.out with that I do nothing, I hate halloween, never ever took my kids out guising, they dressed up for halloween parties but nothing else. I hate masks and so halloween scares the shit out of me!

laddersandsnakes12 · 23/10/2022 17:02

We'll be doing some trick or treating with our DS on the night. A couple of days before that we'll carve a pumpkin and we are going to a colleagues Halloween party on the Sat night. My DH and I have watched a couple of old horror films, and last night watched the Ghostbusters Afterlife film with our son. My husband and I always watch The Shining on Halloween night too, it's become a bit of a tradition. I never used to bother with Halloween but with our son I now actually quite enjoy it, it's something fun to do. I've also been reading Dracula this week to get in the creepy mood. I love autumn and this time of year, so now I try to fully embrace it!

eddiemairswife · 23/10/2022 18:35

Is Hallowe'en taking over from Bonfire Night?

AngelicaElizaAndPeggy · 23/10/2022 18:40

Watching the news - far more frightening than any ghost or ghoul.

bloodywhitecat · 23/10/2022 18:45

Keeping it very low key, I have a new fosterling moving in this week. I did think we might go to a pumpkin patch and choose a pumpkin to carve, the girls (AKA the hens) will love all the innards that come out of it.

MajorCarolDanvers · 23/10/2022 19:28

Fully expect those bitching about Halloween to be back in a few weeks to complain about Santa v Father Christmas.

They bleat the same dreary stuff every year like clockwork.

🎃🧹🧙‍♀️💀👻meanwhile the rest of us have fun.

Happy Halloween

Halloween is one day (31 October) so wht would anybody be doing anything for Halloween this week?

Exactly

Beezknees · 23/10/2022 20:58

Nothing. DC is 14, too old for pumpkins and trick or treat. We live in a big block of flats so we get no kids round.

Wishyfishy · 23/10/2022 21:03

I’m surprised how many schools do dress up and discos for it. Our school has never once mentioned Halloween, which I’m glad about really.

tiredofthiisshit21 · 23/10/2022 14:10

Nothing. It's bullshit.

This!!

Chloefairydust · 23/10/2022 23:55

Will be snuggled up with my partner watching horror films, with popcorn and some beers … We might go to out for a couple of drinks at the pub first… If we stay home in the evening I will make sure we have sweets in for the trick or treaters.

Schools here (Northern Ireland) and the Republic always close for Halloween.

www.education-ni.gov.uk/articles/school-holidays

Halloween in Ireland (and Scotland where the name Halloween originates) goes back centuries (Immigrants from both countries popularised it in North America in the late 19th to early 20th century). In England Guy Fawkes is celebrated instead (or at least was I hear).

As for it being a “bs non event”, maybe for some English people as it’s a Celtic custom you haven’t traditionally celebrated until recently as the much less interesting “penny for the guy” was the main event in England. As a child in Ireland in the eighties I looked forward to Halloween almost as much as Christmas. The whole school week leading up to it was dominated with carving out turnips, painting spooky images while at home we bought costumes and masks for going door to door, got fireworks and also gathered wood for the bonfires. The only thing i didn't get to do back then which kids today get is carving a pumpkin...we had the traditional turnip which is much harder to hollow out (plus it soon smells).

TheFormidableMrsC · 24/10/2022 00:49

It's quite a big thing where I live and people go to an awful lot of effort which attracts visitors. It's fun! This year I'm having neighbours in for drinks and finger food.

Plenty, if you read people's responses. People are having fun. Noone is making you do it, so why be snide about people enjoying themselves?

liveforsummer · 24/10/2022 01:03

Yes it's well celebrated here in Scotland although we never have it off school unless it falls on a weekend. Our half terms are earlier due to returning in August from summer rather than September. No thinks twice about it being on a school night though. Who cares if you turn up a bit to end with some face paint in your hairline smelling of scorched turnip 😆

Pixiedust1234 · 24/10/2022 01:04

I'll be hiding. Its not a thing for us and fortunately its not been a thing in my area in the past. Unfortunately several new people with kids have moved here.

On the plus side ill be saving electricity by turning the lights off 😂

RLScott · 24/10/2022 01:08

JenniferBarkley · 23/10/2022 15:40

Our half term is next week (NI). I would find it weird to be in school on Halloween - different cultural expectations in different places. Halloween will be a bank holiday in ROI this year I presume given it's a Monday.

At school on the day of Halloween...unthinkable.

If the Celtic custom that is Halloween ever gets as big in England as it has always been in Ireland and Scotland (and I think it probably will) then kids in England will surely have to get the day off (and the day after).
