Chickenpox vaccine has had a national shortage in the last few months. DS is 1 at the end of October and his MMR jab is booked for about 2 weeks after he turns 1. The chickenpox vaccination slots have been reopened in some places and we managed to get DS a booking for the day after he turns 1, but they then won’t be able to do his MMR for 4 weeks after this.

so would you:

a) get the chickenpox vaccine done ASAP in case there’s shortages again and wait 2 extra weeks for the MMR
b) get the MMR and chickenpox done on the same day (bookings aren’t open this far in advance so I’d have to wait and go through the uncertainty of ‘will one be available’
c) get the MMR done and wait 4 weeks after that for the chickenpox vaccine (this wait is required) and just hope there’s no more shortages?

Ask the Dr's what they recommend?

Gobrookeyourself · 23/10/2022 10:05

I have, either one is fine but DH thinks the MMR is more important and to not delay it by 2 weeks and I’m worried if we wait there’ll be chickenpox vaccine delays again..

I agree with your dh, I'd get the MMR on schedule and not worry about chickenpox, just get it when you can. I don't like messing with the NHS system, I'd be worried about them forgetting about me! I know there are horror stories about all illnesses but I'm sure I'd rather dc got chickenpox than measles.

It may have changed since I had my children vaccinated, but do you not need two doses of chickenpox vaccine 4-6 weeks apart? If that's the case I'd get MMR first to have it over with before getting the chicken pox vaccine

I'd say MMR first as those diseases are more likely to have bad outcomes than chickenpox.
