The inevitable return of Mornington Crescent

As winter approaches and the nights draw in, one’s thoughts naturally turn to wholesome, homely entertainment. Instead, though, I invite experienced players and novices alike to join me in a game of Mornington Crescent.

To keep the pace gentle, I’ll begin with an inverse Lepton to

Time to use the Elizabeth line rule, move to Bond Street.

Time to use the Elizabeth line rule, move to Bond Street.

We can use the Elizabeth Line in the first Wednesday in November????

Bloody Hell, that changes everything

Hmmm

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 01/11/2022 21:37

Yes, word has reached me about your weekend exploits, TragicMuse. I must commend you on both your athleticism and the speed with which you were granted bail.

Tottenham Court Road

Shhhh! Walls have ears etc.

Richmond

DuckonaBike · 02/11/2022 18:47

Indeed, Tragic. I’ve certainly never seen anyone do that with a lute before.

Ravenscourt Park

balalake · 02/11/2022 19:48

Interesting moves, and I have not heard a lute played during a game for many years. A hurdy gurdy interrupted proceedings as well in the middle of a heated discussion about the merits of playing the Waterloo and City line rule on a bank holiday.

Ealing Common keeps me well away from any such contretemps.

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 02/11/2022 20:51

Of course, TragicMuse. Your secret is safe with me, just so long as the Admiral, the Secretary of State and the lead bassoonist don’t snitch. As we haven’t had a parallel double flip for a while:

TragicMuse · 02/11/2022 21:11

Thank you, noble competitors! Hopefully I'll will be safe under the 30 years rule...can't say the same for the Padre, but that's his lookout!

Ladbroke Grove. Naturally.

DuckonaBike · 02/11/2022 22:11

Ah yes, that makes sense.
Now a quick pas de chat to Maida Vale

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 02/11/2022 22:29

You have only yourselves to blame

Snaresbrook

OP posts:
Flumpaphone · 03/11/2022 08:27

I know it's only the 3rd but it seems an appropriate time to play the Beefeater defence, I realise it might put me in Nidd a couple moves down the line but I'll risk it

Tower Hill

balalake · 03/11/2022 18:04

Interesting move on the 3rd, probably good job it is not a feast day for other than those who seek the help of St Martin de Porres, most of whom play the Spanish game, Gran Via.

A move to Aldgate therefore.

HazelBite · 03/11/2022 18:56

Oh for heavens sake it's all getting very complicated, it's taken me a while to know where to go next......
Preston Road
Thats the best I can do (for now)

balalake · 03/11/2022 19:32

Northwick Park seems a sensible move.

HazelBite if you want something simpler than the game of games, I suggest understanding the Duckworth -Lewis method.

TragicMuse · 03/11/2022 20:48

Ooh, now then...

Trumpington's reverse means I have to play Goldhawk Road

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 03/11/2022 20:50

Vraiment? Well, then, a grande jetée to

South Kensington

OP posts:
SheilaWilde · 03/11/2022 21:04

The Humphrey Smith rule would normally dictate a move to Westminster but the inclement and very wet weather cancels that (under rule 42 of the Rother appendix) so it can only be Bayswater.

DuckonaBike · 03/11/2022 22:14

Evening all. Having consulted the tide tables, I think I’m allowed a diagonal to Finchley Road and Frognal.

balalake · 04/11/2022 07:29

Clever move. I'll make a simple one to Brondesbury using the London Overground rule.

HazelBite · 04/11/2022 08:43

@balalake I'll have you know I've been playing this game for 40+ years and I cannot seem to think we have lost the true and pure essence of this beautiful game, however I think in view of your last move I will have to go Stonebridge Park

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 04/11/2022 10:09

A mere 40 years? It’s always good to welcome novices into the game although, frankly, anyone who wasn’t at the Reykjavik tournament in ‘52, where the Edgware Conundrum was finally and definitively resolved, will always be at a disadvantage. And, of course, the Colonel was at his most brilliant and creative then. But, onwards to

Island Gardens

OP posts:
balalake · 04/11/2022 13:06

The DLR rule does have its uses, though not an option in the Reykjavik tournament of course. I shall play it to get to Canning Town.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 04/11/2022 18:18

It’s Friday, the first in November, so to the river it is and off we go to Greenwich. That I know leaves a very easy move for someone, but, I’m feeling generous.

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 04/11/2022 18:23

I didn’t get where I am today by falling for ploys as transparent as that. Reminds me of the time in Gstaad when the Archbishop and the Adjutant-General were in cahoots, trying to lure the Colonel into playing Paddington on the diagonal. What a bloodbath that would have been.

Woolwich Arsenal

OP posts:
TragicMuse · 04/11/2022 18:45

First Friday means a stride to Holland Park.

balalake · 04/11/2022 19:33

There may be fireworks this evening. Let's go to Ealing Common to see if that is the case.
