The inevitable return of Mornington Crescent

1000 replies

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 22/10/2022 18:10

As winter approaches and the nights draw in, one’s thoughts naturally turn to wholesome, homely entertainment. Instead, though, I invite experienced players and novices alike to join me in a game of Mornington Crescent.

To keep the pace gentle, I’ll begin with an inverse Lepton to

She did indeed take a relaxed view @ComeIntoTheGardenMaud I may or may not have mentioned I had a game in progress that I felt keen, nay, compelled to return to. The only reason I was there so long in the first place was that it seemed they were having trouble contacting her. One assumes she was undercover somewhere, but she seemed to have a knowledge of this very game ….

looking at the rather familiar posting styles here, one has ones suspicions

anyway.

<contemplates the sorrowful waste of chutney>

RomanMum · 28/10/2022 00:04

Can I interject with Gunnersbury Park?

All this talk of chutney reminds me of an eye watering evening many years ago with the colonel and a jar of aubergine chutney in the vicinity of Gunnersbury Park station. Ah, happy memories.

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 28/10/2022 09:27

Ah, RomanMum, was that the legendary annual MC picnic and all-in wrestling match? The Colonel’s sporting prowess was legendary, although only the novices would be rash enough to challenge him.

Whilst the picnic was most enjoyable, Mr Morris's Fancies were exceptional if memory serves, I do recall a rather ugly dispute over the use of the Davies sideways slide on even numbered months - quite the waste of trifle.

TragicMuse · 28/10/2022 10:59

Good morning!

Hyde Park Corner.

Simple, elegant, classic Stovold.

DuckonaBike · 28/10/2022 11:51

Morning all. Is it too early for an aperitif?

West Brompton

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 28/10/2022 12:03

Never too early for an aperitif. <<fills cocktail shaker with absinthe and crème de menthe>>

I think as we are on the DLR, London City Airport DLR.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 28/10/2022 13:56

As many of you know Dd has long been persona non grata chez Fuckery due to her disparaging the Great Game. When she referred to it as “a load of made up gubbins” Christmas 2020, it lead to the Colonels first brush with apoplexy. Imagine my schadenfreude when her latest beau’s family is big in the Amsterdam competitive circuit. I believe it’s called De Pijp? Must be very short games though, but I think they use the Den Haag convention and include all European cities.
However, for our game Go West to Slough.

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 28/10/2022 14:56

Oh how that must strike at your maternal bosom, OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow.!As the great bard (himself a devotee of a very early version of the game of games) said, ‘tis sharper than a serpent’s tooth to have a thankless child or one who disparages the noble game, although I am quite sure that the Colonel has been prone to the apoplexy since long before 2020. Do you not recall what happened in Tokyo in ‘87, when someone played Kings Cross on a diagonal shunt?

But in honour of the Dutch game

I'm sorry I think we all need to get back to basics here, we have been travelling (and I use the term loosely) slightly off piste, so back on track.....
Lancaster Gate

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 28/10/2022 18:20

To be fair Maud, we did used to match him to the F&B paint chart for laughs during elections.
and as we are back to basics- Kings Cross.

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 28/10/2022 18:30

Hmm. If we must restrict ourselves to the basic game, then

Acton Town

OP posts:
RhubarbFairy · 28/10/2022 18:44

I for one feel that keeping true to the original game is not restrictive, but rather requires a certain finesse. There will be space for these new fangled stops in time, of that I have no doubt. However I'm sure I don't need to remind everyone of what happened in 1979 when the Jubilee Line opened.

With that in mind Great Portland Street

squarepegleg · 28/10/2022 22:11

Well it looks like we're all playing to shinigad's shift ruling brought in after the triple cord strike therefore:

Chalk Farm

Usererror1999 · 28/10/2022 23:03

@OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow ah.. so your daughter is dating Kees Vanderlyle of the Amsterdam Vanderlyles? You’ve certainly kept that a secret. You’ll be interested to know that during the Den Haag convention, a number of us spotted some Dames and Heren from the Haarlem Vanderlyles in Kurhaus. Most unexpected. Anyway, next move: St Pancras

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 28/10/2022 23:50

This is getting more surreal by the moment

Is it against the rules to bring in the 'black history' tube map into play and hurtle straight to Fanny Coker ?

New player here, so the rules are a little hazy. Halloween Grin

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 29/10/2022 09:55

A scion of a different family I’m afraid, very much nouveau. But to cheer us all up, how about a triple Maxima shunt to Theydon Bois? Opens the game right up.

DuckonaBike · 29/10/2022 10:07

It certainly does OhWhatFuckery! Nice move, and facilitates an epic slide to West Acton.

I feel invigorated.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 29/10/2022 10:34

Apologies, I got distracted by Mrs Trellis's latest missive. That was indeed an epic slide, Duck.

I am going with a simple but classic move

Bond Street

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 29/10/2022 10:36

The rules of the game of games are evanescent and evolving, lightlypoachedeyeballs, so let us embrace the BHM map:

Dido Elizabeth Belle

OP posts:
RhubarbFairy · 29/10/2022 13:40

Excellent addition to the game. I propose a move to George Rose

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 29/10/2022 14:40

I’m pleased to hear that Mrs Trellis is on good form, although I’ve long found it curious that we never see her and the Colonel in the same room at the same time. I suggest we progress to

Evelyn Dove
