Does non fragranced bio washing powder exist?!

Sorry - a bit of a boring one!

My DD's eczema is bad, and I'm once again changing the laundry products to see if that helps. I have read that it's a myth that bio products irritate skin more, and that's it's probably more likely to be the fragrance.

I'd rather use bio because the clothes can be pretty grubby, but I can't find a non-fragranced version! Bio and fragrance seem to go hand in hand, and the only fragrance free products are non bio. Has anyone found anything, or is it actually true after all that non-bio os best for eczema?

Thank you for any help!

Almat at Aldi has a bio liquid which doesn’t smell of anything. It’s not specifically fragrance free but there’s no smell to it.

Chasingsquirrels · 22/10/2022 15:52

I have no idea if any of the ingredients are fragrance, but Aldi Almat Bio power doesn't have a smell.

I use the boxes of Sainsbury's own brand bio and non-bio, neither seems to leave a smell on clothing. I haven't actually checked if they have any fragrance type substances.

I use Waitrose Sensitive Laundry Liquid as recommended by my Dermatology Consultant. No problems since using it and I have very sensitive skin.

I would take the whole 'bio powder triggering eczema is a myth' with a pinch of salt given that everyone in my house is allergic to all biological powders. It's likely to be an ingredient that's common to them all, or a reaction to the enzymes, but it is definitely possible to be allergic to it! The only powder my very sensitive DS can tolerate is actually Fairy, he is even allergic to bio powder if someone else cuddles him while wearing clothes washed in bio-powder.

Wauden · 22/10/2022 20:39

Ecover is really natural and one of the washing powders does not have a smell.

tatyr · 22/10/2022 21:26

It might also help to use the minimal amount of powder you can get away with and do an extra rinse off you suspect sensitivity to powder

floataboat · 23/10/2022 11:08

Thank you all. I'll try Aldi. I've just started doing an extra rinse again too, so that might help. Quite honestly, whenever I've changed the washing powder before, it's made no difference, but I have to persevere.

@DinosaurOfFire yes, I've heard a lot of people say that. I'll stick with non-bio for now - I don't think it cleans as well, but it'll be worth it if her eczema improves!

OP ..I've used non-bio in the past as bio powders seem to make us itch, though I'm also sensitive to scents. I think in the last few years they have increased and u now find it hard to walk down the aisle as the smell is horrendous

A while ago there was an AMA on here from someone who worked for one of the big firm's developing washing detergents. They said non-bio's were not popular on the Continent but also they were not obsessed with 'smell' like we are. So I thought that maybe it wasn't the enzymes that irritated but scent

DinosaurOfFire · 23/10/2022 17:01

@floataboat I make sure to wash everything in 40 degrees with non-bio. If there are any stains, I find that a blob of washing up liquid on the stain (we use green fairy) and then washed as normal with an extra rinse gets most things out. White vinegar also works as a softener/ smell remover in the wash and we've never had an allergic reaction to that either.

DramaAlpaca · 23/10/2022 17:10

Aldi Almat is the least fragranced one I've found.

I use it because I detest fragranced washing powder, not because of skin conditions, though if my skin reacts to any ingredient it's usually fragrance. I've no issues with Almat.

It washes really well too, and of course it's cheap.

Itstoobig · 23/10/2022 17:39

Ocado own-brand non-bio doesn't have any discernible fragrance. I also use the Aldi non-bio but i I think it is slightly fragranced (a smell I actually love). Have you tried ecover- pretty sure they do a fragrance-free one too

Daleksatemyshed · 23/10/2022 18:49

If you're open to washing liquids rather than powder then try Surcare. It has very little to no perfume

I use Surcare washing powder but it is non bio. I now find everything else absolutely stinks.

Wauden · 12/05/2023 18:19

Ecover do do this. I buy a big box from Ocado or Waitrose.

ditalini · 12/05/2023 18:24

My mum uses Surcare liquid as she has very sensitive skin. It seems to clean as well as Ariel/Persil Bio when I've used it, but she also sometimes adds a scoop of Vanish powder without having a reaction. That could be a compromise?

Uh, that says 'Perfumes'.

The unscented Ecover is non bio.

There's one called R3fill (I think) that is biological but fragrance free..
