Gas and electric bill for the last week…

30 quid. I’ve had the heating on literally two hours a day that’s it, in only 3 rooms! I’ve been having a few baths, could that be a factor?

I just can’t believe it. In winter obviously the heating may be needed for 6 hours a day. I’m so so worried.

What is your electricity usage? What appliances are you using?

Bakersnil · 22/10/2022 12:55

@Bakersnil just had heating on in 3 rooms, use kettle quite a bit and then the gas oven to cook. That’s literally it.

Bakersnil · 22/10/2022 12:56

Oh and tv on maybe 5 hours a day

Heating enough water for a bath uses a lot of power.

mammymums · 22/10/2022 12:57

I would say £30 a week is quite low. I barely have my heating on and mine is £70-£90 a week!

Got2besoon · 22/10/2022 12:59

I haven't had heating on at all and mine is quite a bit more than this. I think 30 is relatively low compared to mose.

Bakersnil · 22/10/2022 12:59

Really worried about winter!

Gas and electric? Doesn't seem that bad to me.

I've used £12 just on electric (heating and water is gas). I haven't had the heating on, only take very quick showers and don't use the kettle. Only do 2 loads of washing a week.

Rainraindontgoaway · 22/10/2022 13:24

£30 does not sound too bad considering what you are using.

Overthebow · 22/10/2022 13:27

£30 seems pretty good actually, it’s quite low. You do use a lot of energy, heating on two hours a day, a few baths per week and tv on 5 hours per day is a lot! We don’t have the heating on, have quick showers and no baths and only have the tv on 2 hours per day.

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 22/10/2022 13:29

Do people actually put heating on for 6 hours a day?! That seems excessive

And yes baths use a huge amount of electricity to heat the water.

SeemingOKToday · 22/10/2022 13:33

Christ. If mine was 30 quid a week which included 2 hours of heating a day I'd be skipping down the street.

We're using about £50 a week for both at the moment and that's with 1.5 hours of heating about every third day (when needed).

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 22/10/2022 13:37

Less that £5 a day doesn't sound too bad to me but I'm guessing you might live in the north or Scotland if you've got the heating on already.

A few baths in a week would take quite a bit of energy to heat the water, can you cut something else t economist for that?

dottyrobin · 22/10/2022 13:44

Mine is £30 for the week and I've not had the heating on at all

whirlyhead · 22/10/2022 13:59

£50 a week here at present and haven’t yet turned on the heating. I’d be very happy with £30 a week.

Ccoffee · 22/10/2022 16:55

I have a bath every day, heated by a gas boiler. It's about 50p

User17956743 · 22/10/2022 16:57

It's really quite low,

Ours is on for about that this time Of the year

NewBootsAndRanty · 22/10/2022 17:02

I'm in a 1 bed flat, heating comes on at 7pm, usually goes off around 1/2am.

Electric for the last 7 days was £6, gas £12.22 (both inc standing charge).

Are you on a fixed tariff ? Do you control your heating schedule?

Fuwari · 22/10/2022 17:10

Mine combined was about £20 last week, that’s heating on for 1-2 hrs per day. Average size house but the only one here in the day is me, wfh. Only a couple of washloads a week, dishwasher every other day. So we probably don’t use that much compared to a family.

NewBootsAndRanty · 22/10/2022 17:11

I'm on the Octopus standard variable rate.
The timer on my thermostat is for 7-midnight; normally end up keeping it on for a bit longer til I go to bed though.

I work from home so it's on thermostat. I'm not working in the freezing cold. It's not unusual for parts of our home to be heated most of the day 🤷‍♀️

gotthebigdecisionsright · 22/10/2022 17:13

It seems like a lot to you because it's relative it to your previous bills, but it actually sounds quite low to me (within the context of current price rises) especially if your'e using the heating 2 hours daily.

@Youcancallmeirrelevant

+6 hours seems excessive?*

previous to this year, mine would have been that I suppose, longer if home with kids. I think it's only 'excessive' if you're very worried about the bills.

luckily i'm on a fixed tariff, it's more expensive than previous winters, but it's not as expensive as the price cap rates. I could, in theory, afford to have it on as much as I did last year, BUT, I'm choosing not to.

A bit in solidarity with others who can't afford to, but largely to feel like I'm doing something to help avoid blackouts. I know my individual reduction in fuel usage won't really make much difference, but the more people that ALL do their little bit, might just help.

it's chilly in here at the moment & previously I'd have put the heating on, but instead I've just put a warmer pair of socks & a cardi.
