Parenting hell podcast

I love listening to the parenting hell podcast and have listened for a couple of years now. Recently they have been referring to a guest who didn’t like their children very much and was a bit boring. I have an idea in my head of who they were talking about but wondered if anyone else had noticed this and had any ideas.

If you're working class and went to a rough secondary school, it's not hard to imagine why you'd send your children to private school if you could afford it.

SheilaSazs · 23/10/2022 19:09

What about if you're working class and went to a perfectly decent secondary school? They do let us in you know...

Weirdly, I’m a bit obsessed with trying to work out if Rob’s kids go to a private school. I think they might be as the holidays are somewhat out of kilter with state ones.

Oh for sure they do! A couple of things he said about meeting other dads etc always made me think they are at private school.

I really enjoyed the podcast initially but then I found that they just kept banging on about class, and I found it annoying.

Robostripes · 23/10/2022 19:15

I think Paul McCartney is a bit of an outlier … the vast majority of people you see on TV will send their kids to private school!

AdriannaP · 23/10/2022 19:17

I really enjoy the podcast, not always the guest episodes but generally it’s very funny. The book js rubbish, a massive rip off, very unfunny and badly written. Basically just a way to cash in on the podcast’s popularity. Rob’s book was bad too, I didn’t buy Josh’s as I don’t like him that much.

AdriannaP · 23/10/2022 19:17

@Robostripes exactly! Spot on.

Was debating buying it but I couldn’t finish Rob’s book so I imagine the Parenting Hell book will wind me up as well.
I used to listen to every episode but now I’m finding it harder to listen to, sometimes it feels like they do things just for the “content”.

AdriannaP · 23/10/2022 19:27

@Tibtab honestly save your money. I read 2 or 3 chapters, it’s so boring, some of the same content that is in tbe podcast and it’s written so badly. I can imagine it works as audiobook. (Every chapter is written as a conversation). The chapters with the parents are interesting but not funny, the wives chapters are very boring.

AdriannaP · 23/10/2022 19:28

My theory is that the guy who doesn’t like his kid is the comedian who talked about how his baby is never allowed to sleep in the day so she would be shattered and sleep through the night. Can’t remember his name.

I don't know, I was speaking as someone working class who went to a secondary school in a rough area, which is what Rob has said about his own upbringing. If I could afford private school for my children, you're damn right I'd send them there.

Tibtab · 23/10/2022 19:34

If I was a multimillionaire, I’d send my kids to private school. Handily, I’m too poor to even have the choice.

Sammysquiz · 23/10/2022 19:40

Howeverdoyouneedme · 23/10/2022 18:47

I wouldn’t say so. State schools were good enough for Paul McCartney’s kids.

He’s very much an exception. I don’t think this one example from yonks ago particularly builds an argument against the irrefutable fact that the majority of very rich people send their kids to private schools.

AdriannaP · 23/10/2022 19:49

I think the vast majority of people would send their kids to private school if they can easily afford it. To pretend otherwise and judge wealthy people for their choices is a bit hypocritical.

Personally I wouldn’t because I hate the fact that education has to be so elitist, breeding a ‘I’m better than you because my parents could afford to educate me privately’ mentality. It should be a level playing field for all, but that’s totally idealistic and will never happen in a million years anyway, so I don’t blame those that can for doing it. It’s just not something that sits right with me.

My husband always says this too. If we ever came into a large amount of money I'd definitely fight him on it for our children. In my workplace I'd say around 80% went to private or grammar schools (I grew up in Wales so no such thing as grammars) and they're in a different world to people I grew up around.

I agree it's really shitty that this country is set up in such a way, but I'd definitely take advantage of it if I could.

BusySittingDown · 23/10/2022 20:07

I've only just started listening to this - it kept popping up in my recommended but I assumed I wouldn't like it.

I heard Rob Beckett on the Alan Carr Life's A Beach Podcast and liked him so thought I'd give it a go.

I think it's brilliant, although I'm listening from the beginning and I'm only on episode 50-something so don't know which celebrity they might be referring to. They're still in 2020 on the ones I'm listening to!

Sometimes I prefer the episodes where it's just them, some of the guests are a bit boring. I liked Gaby Roslin - what a ray of sunshine she seemed! Jack Dee seemed like a nice bloke too, completely different to his stand up persona 😃.

I usually love the podcast but they have been rubbing me the wrong way lately. I suppose I’m more touchy lately as the cost of living crisis hits us harder. The thing that really has wound me up was the email promoting their book. Something like “come on you cheap skates get buying” or something similar. Inability to even see past the end of their nose, promo the book fine, doing so by calling your audience cheap when most of us are massively struggling … nah. Get fucked.

Yes that’s what annoyed me. I know they have every right to plug their products but Rob laid it on a bit thick!

Washingeverywhere · 23/10/2022 20:15

Sammysquiz · 23/10/2022 14:40

If you enjoy a comedian’s work, and they then become rich because you and others listen to their podcasts and see their shows, you can’t them complain about them being “unrelatable”.

That’s totally true and I admit to being fickle! Unfortunately peoples charm often fades when they become really successful! They can’t win really. I feel the same about shagged, married, annoyed!

PickledRat · 23/10/2022 20:23

I listen to this sometimes, depending on the guest. I’m not bothered about the private school thing, they are obviously wealthy. What I do object to is Josh abusing the NHS, seems to take his kids to A+E every other week without good reason. People like him make a bad situation worse, buy a decent thermometer and some calpol. He just sounds so wet.

I listen for the comedy element rather than any parenting advice. My kids are older and the ‘advice’ and take on parenting is of no relevance to my situation. I do like their relationship and amusing chat.

TTCBBY3 · 23/10/2022 20:30

Just for the record, Rob's secondary school wasn't rough! It was just a bog standard comprehensive, and in a nice area, so I've no idea where people have got the idea from that he had some awful upbringing in a terrible school. It's just not true. And he was part of a very normal friendship group growing up (I'm actually friends with his brother, wasn't relevant when I said about the private schools and I didn't know it would ruffle so many feathers!)

ShirleyPhallus · 23/10/2022 20:57

The episode with Faye ripley is brilliant, I didn’t know her before but she’s very very funny

Tibtab · 24/10/2022 19:14

Josh always comes across as someone who resents his wife and kids. I know you don’t know anything about celebrities in real life but there’s loads of times when he is just complaining.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 25/10/2022 07:40

I think josh is just an over thinker and worries about everything too much, I don’t get the impression he resents them. Quite the opposite.

I also think they sound like very hands on dads, very involved when they aren’t away working.

Howeverdoyouneedme · 25/10/2022 07:49

I have found I’m less inclined to listen these days. It was more enjoyable when set in lockdown times.
