3.5 year old is constantly ill since starting nursery 6 weeks a go

I guess I just want to know if this is normal? My head is telling me it is and to try and relax but it is stressing me out seeing my poor son ill with something new every week.

He seemed okay the first two weeks, then about a month a go he came down with a snotty nose and cough, kept him off nursery for the day because he just cannot handle being poorly at all and didn’t sleep great so was super groggy.

He has honestly been snotty and coughing ever since, he seemed to get even worse a week a go so we took him to the doctors who said it sounded like he had a chest infection so prescribed antibiotics. He REALLY picked up after 3 days and I thought ‘oh my god finally’ yesterday afternoon hit and he projectile vomited everywhere, was sick for the rest of the night on and off, it was awful.

Woke up today and he seemed in better spirits, ate the majority of his breakfast but still was very lethargic and wanted to lie in our bed with us all day where he fell asleep for two hours (very unlike him) and then woke up to be sick, again 😩

Ever since, he’s just slept all afternoon/evening. Have just woke him up to see if he will have a drink and noticed he has conjunctivitis! Just cannot seem to catch a break! Me and dad are both super ill too, both thrown up today, both on antibiotics, it’s misery.

Sorry to hear he’s not well but yes this is totally normal

DS was like this, he had repeated ear infections at two when he was at nursery. Vomiting bugs, colds, conjunctivitis, everything. He had chicken pox at nursery too. I kept him home for a full week when there was a norovirus outbreak because I couldn’t face that on top of everything else he’d had! DD had a luckier time of it - not sure if her immune system was more robust as she had an older brother at home (who was the germy toddler when she was born).

Does your DS have a multivitamin?

You must have heard about this happening? It's totally normal and is discussed all the time.

Yes very normal I'm afraid, it's really hard and I have a lot of sympathy but you might find it continues for a while yet.

The eyes will have come from the runny nose. It's really normal for thd first few months of mixing

Leakingroofagain · 21/10/2022 19:08

Yep. Settle in for a year of it.

pimlicoanna · 21/10/2022 19:10

Definitely normal

L0ts · 21/10/2022 19:11

Oh gosh, thank you everyone! Annoying but glad to hear it’s normal.

@nannync This is my first child. So honestly no, I’d never heard of it before, which is why I’m asking the question.

Discussed all the time? Where? It’s perfectly possible not to know this otherwise people wouldn’t ask the question…

Yeah this is a thing and it sucks. It seems never ending when you are in the thick of it.

ShowOfHands · 21/10/2022 20:31

In 6 months, DS had chicken pox, ear infection, chest infection, slapped cheek, tonsillitis, norovirus, influenza and several coughs and colds. I wanted to cry. He was rarely ill once at school however.

avocadotofu · 21/10/2022 20:35

Yup definitely normal I'm afraid. Sending hugs.
