Small moral dilemma

I received a cheque today from a car rental company for a refund of an amount they double charged me over a year ago. About £200.

I have been fighting them for over a year to get the documents I needed for my insurance claim for minor damage to the rental car. I eventually got the documents recently (though the claim hasn't been processed yet).

The thing is they actually already refunded the £200 to my credit card in November 2021. I shouldn't cash the cheque, should I... I am so tempted to take it as a fee for the many many hours I spent chasing them.

I can't belief you can remember a refund that far back. Are you sure it isn't compensation for being so slow?

Epicstorm · 21/10/2022 16:56

Definitely cash it.

Season0fTheWitch · 21/10/2022 16:58

Cash it, it's their mistake

girlmom21 · 21/10/2022 17:00

It might actually be a compensation payment for their delays, or is it the exact same amount?

Aria999 · 21/10/2022 17:02

It's the exact same amount down to the penny.

It is seared on my memory as I had to quote it in so many emails, but I double checked my credit card statement to be sure.

I would not cash it.

I think I won't.

Thanks all!

I'd pay it in, but not spend it.

They have made a right pig's ear of the whole thing, so if I were you, keep it, and if they ever ask for it back, send them an invoice for your time and administration costs, and make sure it adds up to slightly more than what they've paid you in error. You can then say that you are prepared to ignore their small underpayment, and will accept the money they have already paid you as full and final settlement.

KangarooKenny · 21/10/2022 17:09

I’d cash it, but keep it.
