Does anyone have the edf energy home hub which tells you which appliances are using the most energy? I am amazed that over 30% of our usage is home entertainment and wonder how they work it out/how accurate it is? Fridges and freezers seem pretty high too which is odd because they are both fairly new.

It says we used 117kwh on home entertainment last month and 74kwh on fridges and freezers.

Just wondered what other peoples readings are for the edf app or for other energy providers if they give similar information.

I have it but I don’t think it’s accurate. It’s based on your own estimations when you set the whole thing up. I had no idea of our true breakdown so pretty much made it all up! Unless you went through it all with a fine tooth comb and set it up with very accurate estimations I’d ignore.

It’s pretty much made up and just based on the wattage demand at anytime. Ours has said 30% heating all summer and we’ve not had any heating on.

I have it but it’s made up nonsense! All they know is how much power is going through your meter into your home. They have no way of knowing how that power is then being used.
Mine currently says that I haven’t used any electricity for cooking this month, only gas - they obviously don’t know that my oven, microwave and slow cooker all use electricity 😂

The overall readings are fine though and it’s useful for checking that we are remembering to turn things off and to see the effect of any cost cutting measures.

Thanks all, I was wondering. My initial thought was that it was all nonsense but I read this article which seemed to suggest it was possible, but not sure if edf uses this though
www.imeche.org/news/news-article/smart-meter-tracks-power-consumption-of-individual-devices

The device uses ‘Triple Ohm’ technology developed by Cornwall-based engineering consultancy 42 Technology. It can be embedded in the meter, and works by monitoring changes in the high-frequency current or voltage harmonics caused when specific appliances are being used within a building, and doesn’t require any additional switches or add-ons.

It can differentiate between the characteristic traces of specific appliance types using an algorithm, and display the results in real time or store them on the meter for incorporation into a bill.

The technology can also be used to monitor the load of different appliances. It is capable of differentiating between a vacuum cleaner with a full bag and one with an empty bag.
