Hi, i’ve got as far as booking the hotel but have no idea what would be good for my two boys 10yrs & 11yr. Weather looks pretty rubbish so please can you recommend where to go! X

My DDs were a bit older when we had a long weekend there and the place they loved the most was actually just outside Birmingham - the Black Country Living Museum. There’s also a canal trip available from there which was fantastic too. And they do the most fabulous fish and chips at the shop in the museum - Hobbs and Sons.

Brindley Place has the Sea Life Centre, a Lego museum/shop and canal trips - all good in bad weather.

Think tank!

mamaduckbone · 20/10/2022 22:42

I think there's a good science museum there - my kids went with school.
Selfridges basement do amazing milkshakes and the toys and sweets will make them drool and fill their Christmas lists up.
The custard factory area has loads of street art, a virtual reality place and good pizzas at 'Baked in brick'

mamaduckbone · 20/10/2022 22:43

@PotteringAlonggotkickedoutandhadtoreregister - Think Tank was the science museum I was trying to think of.

Have a look at if there's anything suitable on at Symphony Hall.

There's plenty of things for half a day:

  • Think Tank
  • Sea life centre
  • legoland (it's small, not like Windsor)
  • Cadbury world (outside the centre but easily accessible by train)

Which part of Birmingham will you be visiting? There are other things outside the centre, but depends where you'll be

BMAG art gallery is free www.birminghammuseums.org.uk/Birmingham-museum-and-art-gallery plus has Edwardian Tea Rooms for cake.

Ikon art gallery - also free - modern art plus glass lift that sings to you plus lovely cafe. www.ikon-gallery.org/

Definitely visit Digbeth and Custard Factory, good murals plus nearby Red Brick Market redbrickmarkets.co.uk/ loads of small independent shops under one roof, good for a mooch

If raining, go to Electric Cinema right by New St Station, if you get the sofa seats you can order drinks/snacks to you via text.

Eating - try the Asia Asia food Hall - also v close to back of New St www.asiaasiafoodhall.com - lots of places under one roof, you put £ on a central card to pay.

Where's your hotel? There's canoeing and paddleboarding from the Roundhouse but not great in crap weather.

Flippettyflip · 20/10/2022 23:01

Oh, and Cadbury World is pretty £ and a bit lame I'd say for a 10 & 11 year old.

There's a climbing place that's v good and pretty close to city centre - www.depotclimbing.co.uk/birmingham/

If they like cats there's a kitty cafe at new St Station but book ahead - it's always been full when I've tried to go!

Loads of nice independent coffee shops - check www.independent-birmingham.co.uk/

Free:
the library- its got a great balcony to view the city
digbeth - go street art spotting
geocaching- there are loads of spots around the city centre
the museum and art gallery- it’s party closed at the moment but there are lots of pop up exhibition
lapworth museum of geology on the university of Birmingham campus- a hidden gem! ( a few train stops away)

costs money:
the lock up- Victorian jailhouse that closed in 2016 and they’ve turned into a museum- very reasonably priced and my 10 and 13 year old cousins loved it!
think tank- brill science museum( basically parts from museums that used to be free but definitely worth a visit)
aston hall- about 15 mins on the bus- pretty interesting if you like history
wildlife and conservation park (short bus ride to cannon hill park) only £7.50 for adults or they do a small family ticket
cadbury world- who doesn’t love chocolate🙂
Back to back houses- you’d need to check if it’s open as it’s guided tour only atm

complete rip off unless you have a voucher:
sealife centre
legoland discovery centre( your kids may feel too old
theatre show at the hippodrome

Yours, a Brummy that knows her city 🙂

Amazing’ Thanks for all your replies! We’re staying near the NEC & happy to travel to anywhere you think is worth it. Happy kids = peaceful life! Has anyone been to the indoor mini golf?

If you fancy a posh drinks stop later in the day Harvey Nicks Bar are very friendly and have always welcomed our DD at that age! Granted she sat quietly and read a book but they didn't look at us like we were brain an alien species Grin

Jaffacake76 · 22/10/2022 22:38

Thanks and wondering the best place to park if we go to the bullring tomorrow? (Sunday)?
