Can anyone help me pick a new hobby?

I used to run and do a team sport but I’ve gotten too old and fat and I need a new hobby. It’s been years since I picked up something new and I’m stuck for ideas. I’d love to know what other people love to do as hobbies and get some ideas.

learn a language, Duolingo is a fun way to get started and you only need to do a few mins a day. great for when standing at a bus stop or whatever. then you can do more as you feel more confident!

DogInATent · 20/10/2022 19:13

What interests do you have? maybe one of those could suggest a hobby.

therubbiliser · 20/10/2022 19:20

I do love learning do a language is a good idea but I’m not very good at them. I enjoy going to the gym and I love the outdoors. I have a dog I enjoy walking too.

I’m a bit lazy though so I also love my couch, TV and phone and mindless scrolling which is why a hobby might be a better idea.

Oh and I’m rubbish at anything crafty/art and I because I’m a bit clumsy/poor coordinated at fine motor skills.

If you’re near the coast, cold water / sea swimming once a week is great! Always plenty of groups too, maybe look them up on Facebook? I know it sounds crazy but it feels so amazing and you get used to it!

Other than that, there are lots of online courses you could do? Maybe look up local groups for things like flower arranging, pottery and so on. You never know, you might find something you’re amazing at and turn it into a little business. My friend took up silversmithing and jewellery making as a part time hobby and now she sells enough on Etsy to make it her full time job so you never know. Good luck! X

Fishing? - it's an outdoor sit-down hobby, combines two aspects of your interests 😅

Coaching of your previous sport.

What about a walking group?

ehb102 · 20/10/2022 19:29

Clay pigeon shooting. Great fun, out doors, bit of walking, lovely surroundings, nice people.

PhotoDad · 20/10/2022 19:32

Photograph, landscape or wildlife. Can walk, or sit in a hide in a nature reserve!

Knittingnanny2 · 20/10/2022 19:45

I was going to say a choir
Unless it’s a highbrow one there’s no need to worry about having a brilliant concert standard voice or even being able to read music.

Geocaching. Outdoors. Loads of variety. Takes you to places you may not otherwise go. Very low cost. Can be as casual or serious as you like - but it is quite addictive when you get into it..
Www.geocaching.com for more info.

Go back to running. Our local club is full of people of every shape and size from 20-70. So so friendly and encouraging. Give it a go!!

Lovestodrinkmilk · 20/10/2022 20:03

Learn a musical instrument. Have lessons if you can afford it, or learn from Youtube videos.

Popfan · 20/10/2022 20:23

Golf! I play, just got my handicap and been accepted into a club. I absolutely love it, outside, lots of chatting in between shots, new friends and a sport where you can be as competitive or not competitive as you like. It's not easy but smashing a drive down the fairway is so satisfying!

Didicat · 20/10/2022 20:25

Scottish country dancing- gentle cardio exercise whilst being social and once you know the basics you can go to dances with or without a partner.

Happenchance · 20/10/2022 20:28

Volunteer as a dog walker or cat socialiser for a rescue centre or the Cinnamon Trust.

Photography and image manipulation using Photoshop and/or Lightroom - the camera part suits your enjoyment of the outdoors, the computer-based part can be done indoors (for hours on end!). Also look into making your own perfumes or bath bombs - I've had a lot of fun doing both.

alongtimeagoandfaraway · 20/10/2022 20:33

I second Scottish Country dancing - very sociable and great fun.

therubbiliser · 20/10/2022 21:55

Wow brilliant suggestions here. I’m drinking wine reading them. I should have mentioned that as another one of my interests. 😁
