Ridiculous question I know but it's DD first non uniform day at school tomorrow. I haven't thought much of it until she told me she wants to wear her very bright tutu unicorn dress. Just wondered what others primary age children wear? Do they get abit dressed up/fancy dress almost? School haven't stipulated other than non uniform/appropriate for the weather.

"normal" clothes unless it's a themed dressing up day for something e.g. world book day, children in need etc.

Just normal clothes really. No one really wears fancy dress at our school but mine do like to choose their clothes. My youngest wore his prized football kit last week.

There are a lot of princess dresses on world book day.

I just let him choose what he fancies. DS is 5 and wore his fave Pokémon t shirt. There’s are definitely young ones in tutus but they do run the risk of them getting ruined.

As long as she can use the toilet, will be warm enough and won’t be devastated if it gets mucky, that will be fine.

The little ones are often more dressy, the big ones will be in jeans or joggers.

Normal clothes unless it's a themed day.

bravelittletiger · 20/10/2022 16:54

Let her wear her unicorn dress if that's what she wants to wear. She's got 70 plus years ahead of her of having to conform with "normal" clothes

SpinningFloppa · 20/10/2022 16:54

Normal clothes unless it’s a themed dress up day, just a random own clothes day then no I wouldn’t send them in fancy dress.

LeafHunter · 20/10/2022 16:55

I worked in a primary school where lots of children wore fancy party dress. Fine for the classroom but not great for the playground at lunchtime (esp the shoes). IME it’s fine to wear anything as long as they’re warm enough, it’s suitable for games and they can get it on and off!

Very bright unicorn tutu dresses are unusual in Y6.

If she's teeny then anything goes. There always used to be a few Spidermen and princesses at ours in infants.

A nice short and t shirt coordinated set in summer, in winter jeans and a jumper. My daughters not into dresses or skirts, and neither is my son.

They will wear the right thing for a theme, which is mostly what their school does. Eg. Ukraine day they wore blue and yellow, world book day they wore character outfits, Christmas it's Christmas jumpers, pyjama day it's pyjamas etc. the school tend to do themes, and are amazing in that they have a special fund to make sure there are themed items for them to wear if parents can't afford it or forget, and check with the kids beforehand and do it discreetly. Before we moved to this are my kids school was not understanding or helpful for people at all.

Let them wear whatever they want to as long as it's suitable for the weather. My DC has worn a football kit or footy shirt / joggers for every non-uniform day I think!

bravelittletiger · 20/10/2022 22:29

There's another thread I'm following on MN titled "how to raise girls with high self esteem". Letting them wear what they want when they want is probably fairly high on the list.

Thanks all. She has gone in with the unicorn dress on along with tights and weather appropriate shoes!
