Has anyone got an tips/must see/stay places for northern France? Our flight to Rome has been cancelled so I’ve just booked a eurotunnel crossing to Calais and thought we’d have a bit of an explore 🤦‍♀️🤣 We’ve got 5 days so can cover a bit of distance so any suggestions would be great!
also posted in travel but thought it’d get more traffic here 🤞

Bayeux is a lovely city/cathedral and has the tapestry of course.
It’s quite a way to the W though, but you could combine with all the D-Day stuff if you’re interested.
Or the WWI sites in Picardy?

GiantKitten · 20/10/2022 15:16

& Mont St Michel is an amazing place (but even further W, and has to be carefully timed!)

Be aware that we are just at the end of fuel shortages because of industrial action. The petrol stations are restocking and you should be fine, but best to arrive with a full tank.
Arras is very nice, Montreuil sur Mer and Le Touquet worth a visit. Also First World War sites if you are interested. The Thiepval memorial is wonderful. I like the Agincourt (Azincourt) museum for earlier historical events.

We’ve been to northern France a few times so here are some suggestions depending on where you end up once you’re there. Amiens is a lovely city and you can get the train to Paris easily from there. Rouen is worth a visit too but you need a Crit Air sticker if you’re taking a car. Parc Bagatelle and Nausicaa in Boulogne are good if you have kids. Ypres and Bruges in Belgium aren’t too far either if you don’t mind driving there. Cite Europe at Calais is decent for shopping and there are the WW2 beaches further down in Normandy. The Bayeux Tapestry is worth a visit too if you’re anywhere nearby. Hope some of that is of use!

Thanks everyone, some good suggestions, and good to know about possible fuel issues

You could turn the other way and go to Belgium. We went to Bruges, Ypres, Waterloo and Brussels.

In Northern France there is Bayeux, Normandy beaches, Honfleur, Deauville, Rouen cathedral and the garden at Giverny.

I've been quite a few times to Lille, Bruges, Gent area - each worth a look. Likewise Antwerp.
You could stay on the outskirts of Paris and get the train in.

DuchessofAnkh77 · 20/10/2022 16:34

oh and Reims / champagne area...

We went to bruges last year otherwise would definitely have considered it. Is Rouen worth a visit?
we like nice old towns, nice food etc

Yes Rouen is nice, lovely historic buildings and the musée des Beaux Arts is fab, lots of impressionist paintings. It is 200km from Calais and you need a Crit'Air sticker so I would be tempted to get the train in.

Fill up in dover, there's fuel shortages. Highly recommend the museum's in Normandy near the beaches, bayeaux for the tapestry. Mont st Michele, also Rouen, I stayed in saint Quentin which had a lovely square, old cathedral and an amazing little restaurant Le petit chef

AriettyHomily · 20/10/2022 17:56

Rouen is awful if you are driving!

Honfleur and Bayeux or go the other way to Bruges

Howmanysleepsnow · 20/10/2022 18:00

Rouen is in my top 3 Cities, definitely worth a visit.

lovescats3 · 31/03/2023 09:37

Bayeux tapestry is amazing

NoodieRoodie · 31/03/2023 09:47

Amiens is beautiful, otherwise Lille, Arras, St Quentin. As for eating my children think Crocodile is the best place ever, they have the buffet and then there is the desert buffet which always has a chantilly machine and an ice-cream machine that you serve yourself from, it's like all their dreams (and mine!) come true 😂

Near St Quentin at Fresnoy le Grand there's a le Creuset factory shop that used to be worth a visit.
